ISU hosts Jazzfest on Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University will host a day of jazz Saturday with performances by middle and high school jazz bands during the day and an evening performance by a quartet of well-known guest artists.

Jazzfest will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as groups take the stage in University Hall Theater. Bands and combos from throughout the region are scheduled to perform in front of judges, who will offer assistance in becoming a better musician.

The ISU Jazz Ensemble will perform at noon.

An evening concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., features a jazz quartet of guest artists – trumpeter Pat Harbison, pianist Steve Allee, bassist Joe Deal and drummer Herlin Riley.

Harbison’s many recordings include a 1999 solo debut, “After All.” In addition to appearances as leader, his recording credits include the PsychoAcoustic Orchestra, the Blue Wisp Big Band, and David Baker’s 21st Century Bebop Band. He is author of many articles on jazz and trumpet, as well as several books, including “Technical Studies for the Modern Trumpet” and “Twenty Authentic Bebop Solos.” Harbison is an active jazz clinician and has been a faculty member of Jamey Aebersold’s summer jazz workshops since 1976. Harbison is a Selmer/Bach Artist and a faculty member at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.

Pianist, composer and arranger Allee is a veteran of more than 35 years on the music scene, working principally in jazz, writing and performing for syndicated radio programs, television and motion pictures, and as a music educator. A native son and longtime resident of Indianapolis, Allee began his professional career at 19 with the Buddy Rich Orchestra before he was drafted into military service during the Vietnam War. He has worked with a veritable “Who’s Who” of major jazz artists across the United States and abroad. Recent performances include the Rufus Reid Trio, The Randy Brecker Quartet, David “Fathead” Newman, John Clayton and The Rich Perry Quartet. He also leads a big band that performs regularly in Indianapolis.

Allee’s performance and network television writing credits with Los Angeles Post Music include music for “Chicago Hope,” “Mad About You,” “Martha Stewart,” “Friends,” “Nash Bridges,” “NYPD Blue,” “Dharma and Greg,” and “Touched by an Angel.” He is music director for the nationally syndicated, Indianapolis-based comedy-variety radio show, “The Bob and Tom Show,” with which he has co-produced more than 50 albums over the past 25 years.

Deal started his first band at age 10, performing at school and community functions. He played trombone during junior high and high school and picked up the bass guitar at 15. At 18, he auditioned on electric bass to enter Indiana State’s School of Music. He was awarded a scholarship, and started his study of the double bass. During his pursuit of a music business degree, he played in jazz band, jazz combos, and orchestra, and in several pop bands in the area. He participated in clinics with jazz bassists Percy Heath, Rufus Reid, Ron Carter, Miroslav Vitous and Milt Hinton. Deal played the Circle Theater Jazz fest in 1994 and graduated from Indiana State in 1985.

His first gig in Indianapolis was in 1983 with trumpeter Clifford Ratliff and drummer Mad Harold Cardwell. He has played with Indy greats Jimmy Coe, Pookie Johnson, Russell Webster, Chuck Carter, David Young, Steve Allee, Claude Sifferlen and Frank Glover among others. He has performed for such notables as Indiana governors Otis Bowen and Robert Orr, Senators Evan Bayh and Richard Lugar, as well as President George H. Bush.

Deal, inducted into the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation Hall of Fame in 2008, has performed with jazz legends Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Heath, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Shew, Pat LaBarbera, Phil Wilson, Mike Metheny, Art Blakey, pianists James Williams and Geoff Keezer, and Spyro Gyra member Dave Samuels. He has worked with television recording artist Ann Hampton Calloway, Manhattan Transfer vocalist Laurel Massee and comedian Rich Little. Born into a musical family in New Orleans, Riley was always surrounded by music. He began playing the drums at age 3. Riley studied trumpet throughout high school and two years of college. His attraction to the trumpet was short-lived, however, and he concentrated his efforts on the drums.

He was a member of Ahmad Jamal’s group from 1984 through 1987. He has recorded with Marcus Roberts, Dr. John, Harry Connick, Jr., George Benson, Benny Wallace and Mark Whitfield, among others. His theater experience includes playing in “One Mo’ Time” and “Satchmo: America’s Musical Legend.” He joined Wynton Marsalis’ touring and recording group in 1988 and performed with the group until it disbanded in 1994.
