Colts tightening up final roster

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts continued to assemble their regular-season roster Sunday, waiving veteran safety Matt Giordano and adding former Nebraska linebacker Cody Glenn. Glenn, a fifth-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins last April, was claimed off waivers.

There were other reports that the Colts have also signed former Arizona Cardinals safety Aaron Francisco. Team officials, however, have not yet verified Francisco’s arrival. The 6-foot-2, 207-pound defensive back, who played collegiately at Brigham Young, was released by the Cardinals. He has reportedly inked a one-year, $620,000 contract with Indianapolis.

The Colts have signed seven players to their eight-man practice squad, bringing back running back Mike Hart; wide receivers Taj Smith, John Matthews and Sam Giguere; tight end Colin Cloherty; defensive tackle John Gill; and offensive guard Jaimie Thomas.

Hart (ankle), Giguere (leg) and Cloherty (foot) were all sidelined by injuries in training camp. Thomas was a seventh-round draft choice this past spring.

• Sanders on active roster — Safety Bob Sanders has been activated off the physically unable to perform list and will be on the Colts’ regular season roster heading into Sunday’s season and home opener with Jacksonville.

Sanders has been recovering from offseason knee surgery. His availability for the Jaguars game has not been disclosed as of yet.

• Weatherford cut by Jaguars — Saturday was not a good day for former Terre Haute North players trying to make NFL rosters.

On the same day as Indianapolis placed tight end Jamie Petrowski on the team’s waived-injured list, the Jaguars waived punter Steve Weatherford. Weatherford, who played at Illinois and was a high school teammate of Petrowski’s, had signed with Jacksonville last year after being released by the New Orleans Saints.
