INDIANAPOLIS —
Both Bill Polian and Jim Caldwell are looking to the future when it comes to injured quarterback Peyton Manning.
Polian, the Indianapolis Colts’ vice chairman, announced earlier in the week that Manning would not try to play in the team’s final two regular-season games. They agreed Tuesday that the four-time National Football League MVP won’t be practicing with the team over the final two weeks of the year either.
“He’s rehabbing,” Caldwell said before the start of Tuesday’s practice session. “That’s probably what I can say best to you, and I know it’s one of those things where everybody has an interest. He’s not going to practice at all with us here in the next two weeks. One of the reasons why is because it is a short week this week, and we’re probably going to operate at a little different pace. He feels and the doctors and guys that he’s working with feel that he could probably be a little better served working in his own drill work.
“He can put together some things to, certainly, enhance his rehab, and he’s also concerned about not taking any reps away from Dan [Orlovsky] or Curtis [Painter] in terms of the week’s preparations.
“So he’s going to focus in on more of the rehab and probably the rehab more so outside the confines of a practice session.”
The Colts coach reiterated the situation.
“He’s not going to practice within a practice structure. He’s going to stay within his rehab and work with the trainers, doctors and things of that nature,” Caldwell explained.
When asked about comments that Polian made on a national radio show earlier in the day concerning the quarterback’s post-practice rehab session last Wednesday, the Colts coach preferred not to elaborate on the workout.
“I’m not going to comment. I’m just telling you that [Manning is] making progress and he’s improving, and that’s about all I could say. He’s getting better, which is key,” Caldwell said.
“I think that was also, certainly, the case when you saw that the doctors said, ‘He can ramp it up a little bit more.’ That kind of gives you an indication that he’s getting a little bit better, and they have allowed him to do a little bit more.”
Polian, during an impromptu press conference, said that the Colts will be able to make an informed decision regarding Manning’s rehab from neck fusion surgery.
“Yes, by watching him throw. We’ve got until March to make a decision. He’s not going to stop throwing in December,” Polian said, adding that league rules concerning offseason workouts shouldn't limit the quarterback’s work at the Colts complex.
“[The NFL and NFLPA rules] do not apply to a player who fails the physical examination and is rehabilitating.”
Manning, as will the rest of the players on the Colts roster, will be given an end-of-season physical in the days following the team’s Jan. 1 season finale at Jacksonville. He is not expected to pass the physical due to his neck rehab issues.
• Injury list – Returning to practice on Tuesday were defensive end Jamaal Anderson (groin), linebacker A.J. Edds (ankle), rookie running back Delone Carter (forearm), defensive end Robert Mathis (knee) and safety Antoine Bethea (knee).
Sitting out the workout were tight end Dallas Clark (neck), linebacker Philip Wheeler (foot), defensive end Dwight Freeney (rest) and defensive tackle Fili Moala (personal).
