TERRE HAUTE —
Halfway through a four-game road swing, the Indiana State women’s basketball team will try to get back to its winning ways with matchups at Chicago State tonight and at Northern Illinois on Thursday.
Tipoffs for both contests are set for 8 o’clock EST.
The 5-5 Sycamores, who will begin Missouri Valley Conference action Dec. 30 at home against Evansville, are coming off losses at Eastern Illinois (75-60) on Dec. 10 and at Michigan (72-44) on Saturday.
“This is a good opportunity to try to bounce back after such a poor performance at Michigan,” ISU coach Teri Moren said after practice Monday. “I felt like we were flat from the beginning [against Michigan]… I was just disappointed with our inability to score and I thought our effort wasn’t there to beat a team like Michigan.”
For now, Moren plans no lineup changes. Against Michigan, no Sycamore tallied in double figures. Deja Mattox, Anna Munn and reserve Nikki Gunning shared high-point honors with eight apiece.
“It’s more of a change in our mindset,” the ISU coach promised. “We had a very spirited practice [Sunday]. They went hard. And [Monday] afternoon, it was the same. I look for them to bounce back in a big way [against Chicago State].”
Moren said Chicago State is much better than its 1-11 record indicates.
“They’ve played some very good basketball teams,” she said of the Cougars. “We’re not where we need to be as a basketball team to overlook anybody. We’ve got to control the things we can control, no matter what the other team’s record is.
“Chicago State is very athletic… They play a 1-3-1 halfcourt zone defense that we’ll see on made baskets and missed baskets. They’ll dare you to throw the ball around and, if you don’t take care of the ball, it can lead to a lot of turnovers.”
Still, Moren feels confident that ISU’s inside players can produce offensively against Chicago State.
“The last two days, a lot of shots have been put up [in practice],” she emphasized.
Moren hasn’t watched as much film on Northern Illinois yet, but she’s got a few ideas on what to expect Thursday.
“I do know [NIU coach] Kathi Bennett is known for having a great defensive mind, like her father [Dick Bennett],” the Sycamores’ coach mentioned. “I expect they’re going to try to exploit us somehow on the defensive end. They have the ability to make other teams play ugly at times.”
Moren said injured point guard Taylor Whitley (knee) is close to returning to the lineup, but probably won’t play this week. That Dec. 30 clash with Evansville is a more realistic target date, the coach noted.
