METRO ROUNDUP: SMWC’s Runyon wins USCAA cross country title

The Woods place third as a team

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Blinding snow and freezing temperatures couldn’t stop Saint Mary-of-the-Woods junior Stephanie Runyon, an education major from Noblesville, from becoming the 2011 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association women’s national champion in cross country Friday.

As a team, the Pomeroys took third place, with most runners finishing in the top 50.

“It was an awesome experience today, but it was a physically tough race,” said Runyon, who beat more than 130 other runners in 25 minutes, 16.46 seconds.

“We’ve never run in anything like this before,” SMWC coach Danelle Readinger admitted.

The Woods captured the USCAA national title in 2009 and 2010.
