Normal, Ill. — Indiana State’s women’s basketball team dropped a third straight game Saturday in Missouri Valley Conference action on the road to first-place Illinois State.
The Sycamores trailed 45-34 at halftime before going on to a 90-61 defeat.
Taylor Whitley led Indiana State with 17 points, including 6 for 7 from the free throw line. The freshman from Geneva, Ill., also finished with five assists and four steals. Senior Kelsey Luna and Chelsea Buher added eight points.
“Taylor was aggressive today, and that’s her game,” coach Jim Wiedie said. “There’s some fire there, and you have to respect that. I was happy for her. Chelsea Buher also did a nice job today and stepped up to play well.”
Junior Kelsie Cooley contributed seven. The Sycamores’ leading rebounders were sophomore Shannon Thomas and freshman Moriah Hodge, who each totaled six.
Illinois State was led by four players in double figures — Ashleen Bracey (19), Maggie Krick (17), Hannah Spanich (15) and Nicolle Lewis (11). Bracey and Lewis added nine boards each, and Lewis finished with three blocks.

• Rose men fall at home — At Hulbert Arena, Manchester used a strong shooting effort on their way to top Rose-Hulman 65-54 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday.
The Engineers featured three players in double digits in the contest led by freshman Austin Weatherford with 15 points.
Freshman Jon Gerken chipped in 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds, while sophomore Jason Haslag also contributed 10 points.
The Spartans jumped out to a large lead in the first half, leading as much as 22-7. The Engineers battled back throughout the half led by Weatherford, Gerken and freshman Nate Gissentanner. The freshmen trio contributed 25 points during the last stretch of the first half to pull the team to a 31-30 halftime deficit.
The Engineers were able to make a strong start to the second half and earned a lead at 46-45 after a Haslag jumper.
Three free throws and a basket by the Spartans gave the visitors a 50-46 lead. A basket and two free throws by Haslag pulled the Engineers to within 52-50, but that would be as close as the Engineers would get as the Spartans were able to pull away in the last minutes of the game to take the victory.
The Engineers dropped to 6-15 and 2-10 in the HCAC while Manchester improves to 13-8 and 7-5 in HCAC play. Rose-Hulman travels to Anderson University on Wednesday to face the conference leading Ravens in another HCAC contest.
• Rose women win — At Hulbert Arena, Rose-Hulman scored twice in the last 30 seconds and successfully defended the final possession to earn a 56-55 women's basketball victory over Manchester College on Saturday afternoon.
A layup by Ashley Poe gave Manchester a 55-52 advantage with 48 seconds remaining, before Rose-Hulman junior Nicole Klass answered with a score of her own to bring the Engineers within 55-54 with 30 seconds left.
Following a missed free throw, Rose-Hulman took the lead at 56-55 on a spinning drive by sophomore Alisa Dickerson with 20 seconds remaining. Manchester had a chance for victory after a foul was called with four seconds left.
Kelsey DeMott missed the front end of a one-and-one that was rebounded by Poe. Her game winning shot fell short and was secured by Rose-Hulman junior Donna Marsh (Mobile, Ala./Baker) at the buzzer to seal the victory.
Marsh led all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Dickerson contributed 16 points, five rebounds and five assists to the effort. Freshman Erin Davey also reached double figures with 10 points and a pair of three-pointers.
Melissa Eltzroth came off the bench with five three-pointers and 15 points to lead the Manchester offense. DeMott also reached double figures with 11 points.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 19-4 lead early in the contest, courtesy of two three-pointers by Dickerson, a trey by Davey and two-point baskets from Marsh and Dickerson. Manchester answered with four three-pointers by Eltzroth in the opening half to move within 33-30 at the half.
In the second half, the score was tied at 40-40 and 48-48, before Rose-Hulman took a two-point lead on two free throws by junior Rebecca Bowermaster. Manchester answered with five straight points to claim a 53-50 edge, before the Engineers utilized their late rally to win.
Rose-Hulman improved to 3-18 overall and 3-9 in league play with the victory, while Manchester dropped to 4-17 overall and 4-8 in conference games. The Engineers host Anderson University on Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.
