METRO ROUNDUP: ISU to play Ole Miss in opener of Hawaii tournament

TERRE HAUTE — The bracket for the 2012 Diamond Head Classic, scheduled from Dec. 22-25 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, has been set for the eight competing teams: host Hawaii, plus Arizona, East Tennessee State, Indiana State, Miami (Fla.), Ole Miss, San Diego State and San Francisco.

The Sycamores will open up play in the tournament against Ole Miss, of the Southeastern Conference. On the same side of the bracket as Indiana State will be San Diego State and San Francisco. San Diego State is ranked No. 16 nationally in ESPN.com’s early men’s preseason Top 25 poll.

The other first-round matchups include Arizona vs. East Tennessee State and Miami at Hawaii.

First-round game times will be announced at a later date. ESPNU will carry eight of the tournament games, including all four first-round games. ESPN2 will air the third place game as well as the championship game on Christmas Day, along with one of the semifinals on Dec. 23.

ESPN3 will have one game, and the entire tournament will be available through WatchESPN, accessible online at WatchESPN.com and through smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app to fans who receive their video subscription from an affiliated provider.

The 2012 Diamond Head Classic, an eight-team men’s college basketball tournament, will feature 12 games over the three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship match.

The family-friendly tournament and resort destination of Honolulu will host the teams to three days of play, practices and the unique spirit of Aloha from the Hawaiian Islands. Teams will also have the opportunity to attend the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl played during the same week. Additional information, including travel packages, can be found on the Diamond Head Classic website at www.diamondheadclassic.com.

The Diamond Head Classic is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN.

Track

n Sycamores honored — Four members of the Indiana State women’s team have been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic team while the Sycamores earned the team award for the 12th straight year.

Named to the squad were Nicole Hope, Richelle Kimble, Leeann Michl, and Kelly Steffen. They join Dustin Betz, Albaro Escalera, Ernest Rollins, Max Tuttle, and Jeremiah Vaughan who were named to the All-Academic men’s team earlier this week.

The Missouri Valley Conference had 22 athletes named to the women’s team including six from Illinois State and Wichita State, four each from Indiana State and Southern Illinois, and two from Drake.

Hope, a senior on the 2012 team, has a 3.65 grade-point average while majoring in exercise science at Indiana State to earn her second USTFCCCA recognition. Hope was named a second team All-American with a 13th place finish at the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. She was named All-Missouri Conference for the second straight year after winning the MVC Indoor title. Hope was also a second team selection to the Capital One District V All-Academic Team and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete track and field team for the second straight year. She did not compete in the outdoor season due to an injury.

Kimble, a junior on the 2012 team, has a 3.79 GPA while majoring in communications at Indiana State to earn her third USTFCCCA honor. She competed in the pole vault at the NCAA East Preliminary during the outdoor season and just missed a trip to the NCAA Finals with a 14th place finish. She ranked 33rd nationally in the indoor pole vault, earning her second straight All-MVC honors with a second place finish at the MVC Indoors. Kimble also earned All-Conference recognition during the outdoor season by tying for second in the pole vault at the MVC Outdoors. She was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete track & field team for the second straight year.

Michl, a junior on the 2012 team, has a 3.46 GPA while majoring in Exercise Science at Indiana State to earn her second USTFCCCA honor. She finished the indoor season ranked 44th nationally in the 800 meters, earning her second straight All-MVC honor with a second place finish at the MVC indoors. She also earned her third straight All-MVC recognition as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished second at the MVC indoors. Michl also competed in the 800 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary during the outdoor season, just missing a trip to the NCAA Finals with a 15th place finish. She was also All-Conference in the 800 meters after a second place finish at the MVC Outdoors and earned her second All-Conference recognition as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that won the MVC Outdoor title for the second straight year. Michl was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete track & field team for the second straight year.

Steffen, a sophomore on the 2012 team, has a 4.00 GPA while majoring in Math Education at Indiana State to earn her first USTFCCCA honor. She finished the indoor season ranked 96th nationally in the indoor pentathlon. She placed eighth in the pentathlon at the MVC Indoor Championship and was fifth in the heptathlon at the MVC outdoor championship. She also finished fourth in the long jump at the MVC Outdoors. Steffen was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete track & field team.

The Sycamore women’s track & field team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 12th straight year. Indiana State had a 3.37 GPA for the past season while ties them for 32nd nationally. Indiana State has finished in the top 20 among Division I schools in five of the seasons.

Four Missouri Valley Conference schools received the recognition, including Bradley (3.49 GPA), Drake (3.50 GPA), Indiana State (3.37 GPA), and Wichita State (3.35 GPA). There were 171 schools in Division I that received the recognition.

Only three MVC schools were among the 85 teams recognized as an All-Academic Men’s Track & Field team including Bradley (3.37 GPA), Drake (3.28 GP), and Wichita State (3.14 GPA).

To qualify for the USTFCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFFRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

A team must have a GPA of 3.00 or better to qualify as an All-Academic Track & Field Team.

  • Sycamores bow out of MVC Tournament

Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. What the Sycamores weren’t out of was heart, guts and clutch performances from some unlikely sources. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.

  • Indiana State baseball now one win from MVC Championship

Indiana State’s Wednesday morning wish list probably read something like this: a dominant complete game effort from starting pitcher Devin Moore, near-immaculate defense to support him, and a steady diet of clutch situational hitting from lineup spots one to nine.

  • ISU baseball team builds on success with 14-2 rout

Indiana State’s baseball victory over Alcorn State on Friday would take on more meaning Saturday if the Sycamores could build momentum and pick up on the good work they did in Friday’s ninth-inning rally.
    Mission accomplished.
The Sycamores were aggressive from the opening inning at the plate and starting pitcher Devin Moore gave them eight valuable and effective innings on the mound as ISU defeated Alcorn State 14-2 at Bob Warn Field.
“It was a really good experience for everybody. It felt great to finally come out here and put some things together. It’s also really nice when your offense puts a lot of runs on the board,” Moore said.
Moore’s eight innings of work were as valuable as gold to an ISU team that is short on quality arms due to injury and ineffectiveness. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning and one of the two runs he conceded was unearned.

Pole vault is track and field for the adrenaline junkie, Indiana State senior Nicole Hope proclaimed during a recent practice at Marks Field.
To catapult oneself about 14 feet into the air with a large $500 fiberglass pole on a daily basis is a risky endeavor.
“We have to be fearless. You can’t be afraid at all,” said Hope, who has also catapulted herself into the NCAA’s elite in the event, ranking 15th in the NCAA with her leap of 13-feet, 9 1/4.
