Sycamores can’t stop Stutz, Shockers

All or nothing.

It was that kind of game for Wichita State center Garrett Stutz. Unfortunately for Indiana State’s men’s basketball team, the “all” came in the second half.

Stutz scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds against the Sycamores … after halftime. The onslaught from Stutz and other Shockers was too much for the Sycamores to handle as they fell 71-66 late Saturday at Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan.

Jake Odum led ISU with 21 points. Myles Walker added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Sycamores. Stutz finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a monster performance for the Shockers.

The loss broke ISU’s three-game win streak and the Sycamores (14-10 overall) dropped to 5-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference. ISU is currently tied with Southern Illinois in eighth place.

WSU vaulted into co-leadership of the MVC after Creighton lost at Northern Iowa on Saturday.

ISU led by five at halftime, but WSU (20-4, 11-2) scored 28 points in the paint in the second half (40 overall) and scorched the Sycamores as much in transition as WSU did in getting Stutz post-up chances. Overall, the Shockers shot 59.3 percent in the second half.

ISU coach Greg Lansing lamented poor offensive possessions by the Sycamores as the main contributing factor in giving the Shockers the chance to get up and running.

“Stutz scored five field goals in the second half. He got deep on us a few times, but he missed nine overall. Our defense was mostly fine, but we took quick bad shots. From the beginning to the end of the second half, we were too quick offensively,” Lansing said.

Defense dominated the first half. ISU was able to build a 13-7 lead by the 13:11 mark as the Shockers struggled mightily from the field with a 3 of 13 start.

However, the one thing WSU was able to do was draw fouls and its ability to get to the free throw line kept WSU in range. The Shockers were 13 of 15 from the charity stripe in the first half and would convert eight free throws during an 11-2 run that put WSU in front 17-15.

“They shot double the amount of free throws we did,” Lansing said.

However, ISU’s defense remained stout. Stutz could not get a foothold against Myles Walker in the paint and the senior 7-footer scored just four points on 1 of 6 first half shooting.

A Walker layup at 3:08 put ISU up 26-25 and ISU would lead for the remainder of the first half Leading 29-27, ISU defended WSU down to the shot clock and Joe Ragland missed a jumper with 3.4 seconds left. Initially, time ran out on the clock, but there was an official’s whistle as the shot clock had expired and several Sycamores had stopped on the whistle. The play was reviewed and the time was restored.

Odum took over from there. He inbounded on the right side, dribbled to the time line and heaved a 31-footer at the buzzer. He drained it and ISU had a 32-27 halftime lead and momentum going into the second half.

Wichita State made just 7 of 29 (24 percent) from the field and the Shockers were 0-for-7 from 3-point range in the first half. ISU made 35.7 percent in the first half, but made four 3-pointers.

“In the first half, we could not buy a basket. They kept us out of transition and they do what they do,” said Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall, referring to ISU.

The halftime advantage turned out to be ISU’s zenith.

ISU’s lead would begin to dissipate at the 17-minute mark. The Sycamores led 36-31, but a 10-0 run by the Shockers reversed the advantage in WSU’s favor. During that run, ISU concluded four consecutive trips with turnovers.

“We talked about being patient on the offensive end, but we were still too quick,” Lansing said.

ISU fought back to tie the game at the 12:27 mark, but then Stutz and company became too much to handle. WSU scored all of its points via layups or fouls in the paint in an 8-0 run to take a 49-41 lead.

ISU never completely faded from view, but could not get over that run either. A Carl Richard 3-pointer at 4:26 made it 58-55, but WSU quickly answered with a Stutz layup and a Toure’ Murry runner to restore a three-possession gap.

ISU’s last chance came with 29 seconds left, trailing 66-62. WSU missed three of four shots at the line to open a window for a possible ISU comeback. But Richard had a 3-point attempt blocked by Ben Smith and Dwayne Lathan missed a hurried jumper near the top of the key.

ISU had 15 turnovers and WSU blocked eight ISU shots. The Shockers joined Creighton as MVC teams that hit the 20-win mark prior to the Super Bowl, a first in MVC history.

“In the second half, we started to make our baskets inside. We were able to make some baskets, get some stops,” Marshall said.

For ISU, it was another close-but-no-cigar effort at Koch Arena. Seven of ISU’s last eight losses at WSU were decided by 10 points or less, including a triple-overtime loss in 2011.

“I told the guys, ‘I appreciate the effort, but we have to play smarter to beat the better teams in the conference,’” Lansing said.

ISU next plays at Bradley on Wednesday.
