Indiana State claims first baseball victory of season

Behind 16 hits, including five for extra bases, the Indiana State baseball team picked up a 12-5 victory at Alabama A&M on Saturday at Bulldog Field in Huntsville, Ala.

Indiana State (1-1) got going in the first inning quickly, plating three runs. Sophomore Landon Curry led off the game by drawing a walk before junior Cody Zimmerman and senior Robby Ort loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. Junior transfer Mike Fitzgerald plated the first runs of the season for Indiana State, bringing Curry and Zimmerman home with a two-run single. After a sacrifice bunt by redshirt sophomore Jacob Hayes, redshirt senior Koby Kraemer made it 3-0 ISU with a sacrifice fly to left field.

After Alabama A&M (0-2) tallied single runs in the first and second innings, Indiana State plated two runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings and one more in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead heading into the sixth. Indiana State tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run triple by Zimmerman to earn a 12-5 road victory.

Curry (3-for-4), Ort (3-for-5), Fitzgerald (3-for-4) and junior Tyler Wampler (3-for-5) all had three hits, with Fitzgerald leading the team with three RBIs. Curry, Zimmerman and Ort all scored three runs. ISU’s 9-through-4 hitters combined to hit 14-for-22 at the plate against the Bulldogs.

Senior Devin Moore (1-0) earned the victory, allowing five runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Four ISU relievers combined to blank the AAMU offense over the final innings while allowing just two hits.

Indiana State closes out the 2013 Bulldog Classic with a doubleheader against Morehead State today. The Eagles defeated Alabama A&M 11-0 on Friday before topping IPFW 11-6 on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.

  • McNichols and Swift 1.jpg FROM THE PRESS BOX: Close, but no cigar, theme for ISU sports in 2012-13

When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
Maybe the prospect of ISU’s season had me so pumped that I decided to get it started close to three hours early? (Or more truthfully, maybe I was over-vigilent about predicted traffic horrors on the Indiana 46 bypass that never came to pass.)

  • TODD GOLDEN: MVC Tourney can be ISU success story if work is done

Prior to last week’s Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament at Illinois State’s Duffy Bass Field, fear and loathing prevailed in some corners of the conference.
It seemed that Missouri State, Creighton, and most notably, Wichita State, had a monopoly on the season-ending tournament since the Coolidge Administration. (It had actually been since 1998.) How could the tournament make it without playing in one of the three aforementioned universities’ big venues?

But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.
