Rose-Hulman matched the best 19-game start to a season in men’s basketball school history with a 60-39 win over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at Hulbert Arena.
The Engineers improved to 17-2 on the season and retain a one-game lead in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 11-1 in league play.
Senior Austin Weatherford led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Julian Strickland also reached double figures with 14 points.
Defensively, Rose-Hulman held its 10th opponent to 45 points or less and its sixth opponent to 40 points or less in a game.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to an 11-6 lead after a three-pointer by junior James Pillischafske, a layup from Gerken and a free throw by Gissentanner. Mount St. Joseph rallied to tie the score at 13-13 on a three-pointer by Andy Countryman at the 10:51 mark.
Rose-Hulman’s defense then stepped up, holding Mount St. Joseph to three points over the next eight minutes as part of an 18-3 run. Gissentanner capped the rally with a three-pointer at the 2:36 mark, helping the Engineers gain a 33-20 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman continued its solid team play to push the lead to 19 points at 49-30 on a three-point play by Strickland with 10:28 left. The lead reached as high as 23 points as the Engineers controlled the margin for the rest of the game.
Rose-Hulman returns to action at Anderson on Wednesday night. Mount St. Joseph stands 6-13 overall and 5-7 in league play.

Women’s basketball
• Engineers win — At Rose-Hulman, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology shot 54 percent from the field and placed three players in double figures to defeat Mount St. Joseph 62-45 in women’s basketball action on Saturday.
The Engineers shot 59 percent in the first half to take a 14-point halftime lead.
Freshman Addie Johnson led the Engineers with 17 points. Sophomore Gracie Gibbs added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Carrie Morris also reached double figures with 10 points. Tara Dennis had a team-high 15 points for Mount St. Joseph.
Rose-Hulman (9-10, 5-7 HCAC) held Mount St. Joseph (3-16, 2-10) to just four points over the last nine minutes of the first half, using a 16-4 run to take a 33-19 lead into the locker room.
The lead remained in double figures throughout the entire second half.

• Pomeroys fall — At Gary, Chelsea Weaver scored 15 for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, but the Pomeroys couldn’t hold back IU Northwes as SMWC fell 106-67 on Saturday.
The Pomeroys led by eight in the first half, but an IU Northwest surge put the RedHawks up 59-37 at halftime and the Pomeroys never threatened from there.

Indiana State junior Greggmar Swift will be among the top eight in the NCAA in the 110-meter hurdles after qualifying for Saturday’s finals on Thursday.
Swift ran a time of 13.51 seconds to take third in his heat. He’ll run in either lane 1 or lane 8 on Saturday.
“I got out pretty good and then I hurdled three or four when I got bumped and it threw me off my rhythm,” said Swift, a native of Barbados. “I tried to get back my rhythm … but I held on for the third place.” -

Sycamores ready for more NCAA track success
Five of the six Indiana State athletes in Eugene, Ore., already have had some memorable track and field careers for the Sycamores.
But they’ll go ahead and try to add to their list of accomplishments in the NCAA outdoor championships this weekend.
Dustin Betz has been a scorer and key piece of eight Missouri Valley Conference championship teams between track and cross country. He’ll compete today in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the Sycamores’ second best in the event behind Jordan Fife. -

What traits do head football coaches seek out when they hire position coaches?
Indiana State football coach Mike Sanford provided insight into that question as he hired former Southeast Louisiana head coach Mike Lucas to his staff Tuesday. Lucas will be the Sycamores’ defensive line coach.
“You have to look at your staff and see what you need. I felt like in this particular case, I wanted an experienced defensive line coach. I feel like we have a mixture of experience and youth and I want to keep that going,” Sanford said. -

Sycamores bow out of MVC Tournament
Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. What the Sycamores weren’t out of was heart, guts and clutch performances from some unlikely sources. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.
