CINCINNATI —
Rose-Hulman relied on a balanced scoring attack and a strong defensive effort to earn a 55-44 women’s basketball victory Saturday over Mount St. Joseph.
Senior Alisa Dickerson recorded her 23rd career double-double to lead the Engineer offense. Dickerson scored 21 points with a game-high 12 rebounds for Rose-Hulman.
Joining Dickerson as double figure scorers were freshman Sheree Williams with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, and sophomore Kelsey Ploof with 10 points and four rebounds.
Erika Miknius led the Mount St. Joseph offense with 21 points. Defense and rebounding were keys to the Rose-Hulman victory, as the Engineers held the Lions to 28 percent from the field and outrebounded MSJ by a 35-25 count.
Mount St. Joseph jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, before Rose-Hulman held the Lions scoreless for seven minutes to take a 10-5 edge on a three-pointer by Dickerson.
Mount St. Joseph trimmed the margin to 15-13, before Rose-Hulman scored the final four points of the first half and took a 19-15 lead into the locker room on a layup by Williams.
Rose-Hulman built a seven-point second half lead at 25-18, but Mount St. Joseph ran off 10 straight points to claim a 28-25 edge at the 12:27 mark. The Engineers answered the challenge, however, by outscoring Mount St. Joseph 14-1 over the next seven minutes to earn a 39-29 lead on a free throw by Ploof at the 5:55 mark.
The Engineers maintained a lead of eight or more points down the stretch to secure the victory.
Rose-Hulman improved to 6-13 on the season and 4-8 in conference play with the victory. Mount St. Joseph dropped to 2-17 and 2-10 in league games. The Engineers hit the road again on Wednesday for a matchup at Anderson University.

• St. Mary-of-the-Woods 73, Lindenwood-Belleville 66 — At Clinton, the Pomeroys had three double-figure scorers and a double-figure rebounder in snapping a losing streak Saturday afternoon.
Brittney Shaner scored 20 for the winners, with Chelsea Weaver adding 17 and Whitney Allen 14. Chelsey Barron had nine points and 11 rebounds and Lyndsi Woolems nine points and eight rebounds.

• Iowa 59, No. 13 Purdue 42 — At Iowa City, Iowa, Kamille Wahlin scored all 13 of her points in the second half and Iowa upset No. 13 Purdue 59-42, snapping the Boilermakers’ 11-game winning streak. It’s the first Big Ten loss for Purdue, which made one field goal in the final 11 minutes.
“We finally got one,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said.
Iowa (12-10, 4-5 Big Ten) seemed like an unlikely candidate for the upset as the Hawkeyes had lost four of their last five games.
Brittany Rayburn hit a 3-pointer to bring Purdue (18-4, 8-1) within 40-37 with 11 minutes left, but the Hawkeyes answered with a 16-2 run over an 8-minute stretch to pull away.
Wahlin — who hit three 3-pointers in the second half, including two in the first three minutes — made a big pull-up jumper as the shot clock expired towards the end of that run. The basket gave Iowa a 54-38 lead with 3:44 left.
Purdue’s Alex Guyton made a lay-up with 2:22 left, ending a nearly 9-minute field goal drought.
“We came out and played hard, but didn’t play with a purpose,” Purdue coach Sharon Versyp said. “We didn’t shoot well at all with tired legs.”
Center Morgan Johnson led Iowa with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Purdue’s top three scores — Rayburn, Courtney Moses and KK Houser — shot a combined 8-of-30 from the field. The Boilermakers finished making only 23 percent from the floor, including 2-of-14 from behind the 3-point line.
“We had plenty of opportunities,” Moses said. “We had open shots and just missed them.”
Iowa’s reserves — who were outscored 22-0 in the first matchup with Purdue — scored 16 points. Virginia Johnson and Theairra Taylor each scored six points, helping Iowa gain control at the end of the first half.
“I felt like our bench players gave us great momentum going into the locker room,” Wahlin said.
Iowa missed 11 of its first 12 shots to start the game and had as many fouls as points for nearly the first 10 minutes. But Taylor hit a scoop lay-up with 45 seconds left in the first half for a 23-21 advantage at halftime — Iowa’s first lead of the game.
The Hawkeyes held on the rest of the way in a tough and sloppy game. The teams combined for 29 turnovers and 42 fouls.
The Boilermakers had won 16 of the last 19 meetings with Iowa, including a 57-55 victory on Jan. 15 in Mackey Arena.
