Indiana State athletics and partner Nelligan Marketing’s new radio deal with Midwest Communications can best be measured not in dollars or the length of the deal, but in watts.
ISU’s games were formerly broadcast on a 6,000-watt flagship station. Starting with the 2012-13 athletic season, ISU’s flagship station will be WIBQ — a 50,000-watt FM station.
ISU, Nelligan and Midwest Communciations — owners of WIBQ — announced the deal on Friday. According to Nelligan Sports Marketing General Manager Jeremiah Turner, the parties signed a two-year agreement.
Nelligan pays a rights fee to Midwest Communications for the deal, but Turner declined to disclose the terms.
WIBQ’s transmitter is located on the west side of Paris, Ill. The station’s signal reaches as far east as Putnam County, north to Parke and Vermillion Counties, south to Sullivan County and covers most of east central Illinois. ISU games will now be heard in Champaign, Danville and Effingham, Ill.
“It starts with the strength of the 50,000-watt station and the expanded geographic area we reach. That’s one of the top things for us when we began to discuss a deal with them,” Turner said.
All ISU football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games will be broadcast on WIBQ or one of its sister stations in the Terre Haute market. Missouri Valley Conference baseball games will also be broadcast with the deal stipulating that some nonconference games will be broadcast as well.
Midwest Communications — based in Wausau, Wis. — owns five radio stations in the Terre Haute market and 46 nationwide. Midwest Communications recently acquired WBOW, ISU’s former flagship station.
“The strength they have promotionally with their family of stations was attractive with Mix FM [WMGI-FM] and 102.7, Although games will be on 98.5, we have tremendously stronger promotional potential and a larger demographic base. We can reach people in demographics we might not have reached before,” Turner said.
Part of the promotional tie-in includes staff-produced promotional activities at ISU games. WIBQ will host a tailgate at all ISU home football games with on-site entertainment by its staff.
Another way ISU’s broadcasting quality should be improved its via its web streaming. A frequent complaint of ISU fans in the past was the inconsistency of the stream under the previous agreement.
“They’ve got a tremendous commitment on the technology side to have a high level of reliability and consistency. They see the value of online streaming for their greater audience. That extends over to our game broadcasts,” Turner said.
ISU began to discuss the deal with Midwest Communications in the early part of the spring. ISU’s relationship with previous partner Crossroads Communications dated to 2000.

Sycamores bow out of MVC Tournament

ISU baseball team builds on success with 14-2 rout
Indiana State’s baseball victory over Alcorn State on Friday would take on more meaning Saturday if the Sycamores could build momentum and pick up on the good work they did in Friday’s ninth-inning rally.
Mission accomplished.
The Sycamores were aggressive from the opening inning at the plate and starting pitcher Devin Moore gave them eight valuable and effective innings on the mound as ISU defeated Alcorn State 14-2 at Bob Warn Field.
“It was a really good experience for everybody. It felt great to finally come out here and put some things together. It’s also really nice when your offense puts a lot of runs on the board,” Moore said.
Moore’s eight innings of work were as valuable as gold to an ISU team that is short on quality arms due to injury and ineffectiveness. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning and one of the two runs he conceded was unearned. -

Indiana State’s Felisha Johnson and Maurice Lyke were both crowned Missouri Valley Conference champions on Saturday during the MVC Track and Field Championships at Drake University.

The will is there for the Sycamores to pull out of their worst slump of the season, but the results are not. The suffering continued on Wednesday at Bob Warn Field as Eastern Illinois defeated ISU 5-3. -
