Rose-Hulman junior basketball player Julian Strickland earned first-team all-Midwest Region honors from d3hoops.com, in results released Wednesday.
Strickland earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Most Valuable Player honors this season for an Engineer squad that reached as high as No. 18 in the d3hoops.com weekly national poll.
Strickland averaged a team-high 14.6 points per game for a Rose squad that won conference regular-season and tournament championships in the same season for the first time in school history. The civil-engineering major became the 29th member of Rose-Hulman’s 1,000-point club and has tallied 1,099 points in his career.
The two-time all-conference selection becomes the eighth Rose player to earn all-region honors and the first since Munchie Muskeyvalley captured second-team honors in 2005-06. He also is the first player honored with a spot on a d3hoops.com all-region squad.
Strickland led the Engineers in scoring (14.6 ppg) and ranked second on the team in assists (68), blocks (14) and steals (29) this season.
The HCAC was well represented on the d3hoops.com all-Midwest Region squad. Defiance guard Logan Wolfrum and Anderson guard Phil Hogan captured second-team all-region honors, with Transylvania forward Ethan Spurlin earning a spot on the third team.
Rose-Hulman finished 24-4 this season to tie school records for the most wins and fewest losses by an Engineer men’s basketball team. The Engineers also qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the 10th time in program history and the second consecutive year.
Baseball
• Austin Peay 6, Indiana State 5, 11 innings — At Clarksville, Tenn., the host Governors tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and won their first of two meetings over the next six days with Indiana State in the 11th, edging the Sycamores at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The Governors improved to 14-2 overall with the victory, picking up their sixth win over teams from the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores fell to 5-6 on the season with the loss, snapping their two-game winning streak after last Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of South Dakota State and Mercer.
Austin Peay took an early 2-0 lead Tuesday, plating a pair of runs in second inning on hits by Reed Harper and Kyle Schlatter. The Governors left the bases loaded in the second as junior Josh Negele forced a flyout to escape the early rally.
Indiana State answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth with Mike Fitzgerald (single) and Casey McCurdy (walk) both reaching base to start the frame. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Hayes loaded the bases following an infield single, allowing redshirt freshman Jeff Zahn to tie the score with a two-run single into shallow right-center. ISU took the lead two batters later when sophomore Landon Curry hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Hayes.
After APSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, Hayes picked up a RBI as his bunt single allowed McCurdy to score from third in the fifth. The Governors tied the score again in the fifth, as Schlatter doubled into the gap in right-center.
Fitzgerald worked his way around the bases in the seventh as ISU took a late lead. The ISU junior led off with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout by junior Owen Conway with one out. Fitzgerald scored during Hayes’ at-bat, as the ball got away from APSU catcher P.J. Torres following a strikeout and allowed Fitzgerald to score from third and put ISU in front, 5-4.
Junior Josh Dove got Indiana State out of a jam in the eighth, forcing a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame with two runners on base. Austin Peay led off the ninth with a double and a single off Dove to tie the score at 5-5.
Indiana State only threatened one time in extra innings, as the Sycamores put two runners on base in the 11th following junior Tyler Wampler and redshirt senior Koby Kraemer both being hit by pitches. APSU was able to get senior Robby Ort to ground into a force out before Fitzgerald went down swinging.
Austin Peay won the game in the 11th, taking advantage of two ISU errors. APSU’s Dylan Riner brought home the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Kraemer, Fitzgerald and Hayes all picked up two hits on Tuesday, while ISU sent eight pitchers to the mound. Harper led the Governors with a 4-for-5 night at the plate.
Indiana State travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for three games with Minnesota this weekend, facing the Big Ten squad inside the Metrodome from Friday through Sunday.

Indiana State junior Greggmar Swift will be among the top eight in the NCAA in the 110-meter hurdles after qualifying for Saturday’s finals on Thursday.
Swift ran a time of 13.51 seconds to take third in his heat. He’ll run in either lane 1 or lane 8 on Saturday.
“I got out pretty good and then I hurdled three or four when I got bumped and it threw me off my rhythm,” said Swift, a native of Barbados. “I tried to get back my rhythm … but I held on for the third place.” -

Sycamores ready for more NCAA track success

Dustin Betz has been a scorer and key piece of eight Missouri Valley Conference championship teams between track and cross country. He’ll compete today in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the Sycamores’ second best in the event behind Jordan Fife. -
Mike Lucas joins ISU football staff

Indiana State football coach Mike Sanford provided insight into that question as he hired former Southeast Louisiana head coach Mike Lucas to his staff Tuesday. Lucas will be the Sycamores’ defensive line coach.
“You have to look at your staff and see what you need. I felt like in this particular case, I wanted an experienced defensive line coach. I feel like we have a mixture of experience and youth and I want to keep that going,” Sanford said. -

Sycamores bow out of MVC Tournament
Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. What the Sycamores weren’t out of was heart, guts and clutch performances from some unlikely sources. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.
