CHICAGO —
There was still over a minute and a half left to play, but the exclamation point had already come on Indiana’s 80-64 win over Illinois.
Yogi Ferrell stole the ball and Victor Oladipo slammed home a 360-degree dunk on the other end to give the top-seeded Hoosiers a 20-point lead.
Oladipo wasn’t sure what he was going to do with the dunk until he was in the air.
“It was just a last-second thought,” he said after the top-seeded Hoosiers defeated Illinois for just the second time in seven Big Ten Tournament meetings between the schools. “I thought about it while I was in the air so I just kind of turned around when I was in the air.
“And no, that’s not my best (dunk).”
The victory sends Indiana (27-5) into a semifinal matchup today with Wisconsin (22-10), a 68-59 winner over Michigan on Friday. The Hoosiers have lost 11 straight to the Badgers, including a 64-59 loss in Bloomington in January.
Oladipo had just two points in the first half, but his defense helped the Hoosiers hold Illinois (22-12) to 21 points and 7-of-27 shooting from the field in the first half.
Illinois kept it close to start the second half and cut the lead to single digits for the first time in over 20 minutes of game time when D.J. Richardson hit two free throws with 8:17 to play.
That made the score 60-52 in IU’s favor — the Hoosiers never trailed — but Oladipo made a layup and Christian Watford hit a 3-pointer, and the Illini wouldn’t get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
“I told these guys after the game, you’re playing a team that’s been ranked No. 1 in the country more than any other team in college basketball and you shoot 27 percent and 16 percent from three and turn the ball over eight times, and you’re (only) down 14,” Illinois coach John Groce said.
“Had they not showed the resiliency and toughness that they did in the first half, we would have been down a lot more. … Offense good second half, defense good first half. When you’re playing Indiana, you’ve got to be good in both, on both offense and defense, both halves.”
The Hoosiers weren’t exactly shooting lights out themselves in the first half, making 12 of 27 from the field. But IU made 15 of 23 shots from the field in the second half and was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.
“We closed the game the last seven minutes, not only defending pretty well, but scoring very well. That’s the key,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said.
Oladipo finished with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Cody Zeller led the Hoosiers with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting, Watford scored 15, Yogi Ferrell had 11 and Will Sheehey added 11 points off the bench as IU improved to 16-1 this season when scoring 80 points or more.
Tracy Abrams and Brandon Paul scored 16 each to lead Illinois while Joseph Bertrand added 10. The Illini now wait to see if they’ll be an NCAA Tournament team.
“We’re excited for Sunday to see what happens,” said Paul, who was just 2-of-13 from the field thanks to Oladipo’s defense. “Once we put two halves together, we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with.”
Meanwhile, the Hoosiers look for revenge against the Badgers.
“Our whole focus was getting ready to play our best basketball today and hopefully we play even better basketball tomorrow,” Crean said. “Never to look ahead and to stay totally locked into the game at hand.”

ISU baseball team builds on success with 14-2 rout
Indiana State’s baseball victory over Alcorn State on Friday would take on more meaning Saturday if the Sycamores could build momentum and pick up on the good work they did in Friday’s ninth-inning rally.
Mission accomplished.
The Sycamores were aggressive from the opening inning at the plate and starting pitcher Devin Moore gave them eight valuable and effective innings on the mound as ISU defeated Alcorn State 14-2 at Bob Warn Field.
“It was a really good experience for everybody. It felt great to finally come out here and put some things together. It’s also really nice when your offense puts a lot of runs on the board,” Moore said.
Moore’s eight innings of work were as valuable as gold to an ISU team that is short on quality arms due to injury and ineffectiveness. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning and one of the two runs he conceded was unearned. -

To catapult oneself about 14 feet into the air with a large $500 fiberglass pole on a daily basis is a risky endeavor.
“We have to be fearless. You can’t be afraid at all,” said Hope, who has also catapulted herself into the NCAA’s elite in the event, ranking 15th in the NCAA with her leap of 13-feet, 9 1/4. -

The will is there for the Sycamores to pull out of their worst slump of the season, but the results are not. The suffering continued on Wednesday at Bob Warn Field as Eastern Illinois defeated ISU 5-3. -

So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012. -
ISU baseball gets back into rhythm with victory
Baseball is a rhythm game. With contests every day or five times a week in the case of many college programs, you have the chance to build on success or wallow in a slump.
Mother Nature took that rhythm away from Indiana State’s team last week. After a 7-1 loss to Indiana on April 24, ISU was supposed to play a three-game series at Tennessee-Martin, but it was wiped out by rain.
So the rhythm was disturbed, but perhaps that wasn’t a bad thing.
ISU was in a five-game losing streak before its unintended vacation and the Sycamores made a move in the right direction Wednesday with a 7-0 win over DePauw at Bob Warn Field.
“It was a disappointing weekend. We went all the way down to Tennessee and didn’t get to play. We sat around in the hotel room. We came here and it was still raining. It was nice to get out and see some live pitching,” ISU center fielder Landon Curry said. - More College Headlines
