The fruits of Indiana State’s labor in upsetting then-No. 25 Vanderbilt on the road on Saturday started to arrive at the Sycamores’ men’s basketball doorstep on Monday.
Sophomore swingman R.J. Mahurin won Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors. Mahurin scored a team-high 14 points in ISU’s 61-55 victory over the Commodores as he was 4 of 7 from 3-point range.
Mahurin was at his most dangerous in the first half, when he made three of his 3-pointers. Two of them helped ISU build a 16-4 lead.
Mahurin also accomplished the rare feat of winning the MVC’s highest weekly honor as a player off the bench.
“It’s certainly a nice feather in his cap. R.J.’s a potent player for us. It’s a great thing for him to notoriety for what he’s produced,” ISU coach Greg Lansing said.
Lansing also noted the honor was particularly sweet for Mahurin, who missed the first two games of the season with a heart condition. That condition has since been treated.
“Going through what he went through with his heart, it’s even more special for me,” Lansing said.
ISU also received one point in Monday’s Associated Press men’s basketball poll. John Feinstein of National Public Radio — best known as the author of Bob Knight saga Season On The Brink — cast the 25th place vote for the Sycamores.
It was the first time ISU has received votes in the poll since 2005 when it started its season 8-0. ISU was one of four MVC teams to receive votes in the poll. Creighton is ranked 23rd, Wichita State and Northern Iowa also received votes.
Lansing was happy with placement in the “also received votes” group, but isn’t going to make too much of it.
“We’re not going to get too far ahead of ourselves. We come off a really good win over one of the best teams in the country, but we know there’s a lot of games to be played,” Lansing said. “We have a lot of goals ahead of us to chase after. [The ranking] is great for the guys, and for ISU, but we know it’s all just a little bit of talk right now.”

Indiana State throwers advance to NCAA championships
A pair of Indiana State juniors punched their ticket to Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday as Felisha Johnson finished fifth and Mary Theisen ninth in the women’s shot put at the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary track and field championships on the University of North Florida campus.
“Both were very focused and had great starts,” ISU women’s track coach Angela Martin said. “They did just what we wanted them to … be relaxed, have fun, and do what they have already done this season.” -
