Illinois State’s backup guard Austin Hill kills Sycamores

St. Louis — Going into its Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal against Illinois State, Indiana State had its defensive plans in order.

It was focused on stopping Dinma Odiakosa, which it largely did as the big man scored just two points. ISU also didn’t want Osiris Eldridge to hurt them. Eldridge scored 17 points, but made just 5 of 17 from the field to get there.

Tony Lewis, who had a double-double against ISU on Feb. 24? He had four points and two rebounds.

No one could have dreamed that Illinois State backup guard Austin Hill would end up being the major thorn in the Sycamores’ side in a 69-65 ISU loss.

Hill, a junior, co-led the Redbirds with 17 points, a career-high. Hill personally had a 10-0 run to end the first half and helped the Redbirds tie the game at halftime.

“We were on oxygen, at best,” Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich said.

“We didn’t have a lot going on either end. We needed a lift, we needed something.

“For him to come in and do that? What amazing courage, on this stage, with what’s at stake.”

Hill’s performance had an affect on the Sycamores.

“I felt like it changed the attitude we should have had coming out of the locker room. We controlled the game for the first 16 or 17 minutes, but we let it slip away,” Richard said.

n Marshall hurting -- ISU has no definitive diagnosis of Harry Marshall, who re-injured his right foot against Illinois State on Friday, but the preliminary signs weren’t promising for the ISU senior

“Harry’s foot was in a boot when he left [Saturday], it swelled up pretty bad after the game,” said ISU coach Kevin McKenna via voicemail on Saturday. “He’ll be re-evaluated Tuesday, but he’s pretty sore.”

Marshall re-aggravated the stress fracture injury in his right foot in the same manner he originally suffered it ... he stepped on Illinois State guard Osiris Eldridge’s foot. The injury occurred when the two were locked up under the basket just before the second media timeout of the first half.

• Quick shots — Illlinois State took a lot of momentum into halftime after wiping out a 12-point deficit to tie the game at the break.

The momentum seemed to transfer to the defensive end for the Redbirds in the second half and the result was that the Sycamores took hurried shots which prevented them from sustaining offensive momentum.

“They forced us out of the things we wanted to do, they sped us up a little bit,” ISU guard Rashad Reed said.

• Postseason —  Unless things break the Missouri Valley Conference’s way and it gets more than one team in the NCAA Tournament, ISU (17-14) had an RPI ranking in the mid 80s on Saturday after its loss to Illinois State. The Sycamores are likely looking at the College Basketball Invitational or the CollegeInsider.com Tournament as their postseason options.

In either case, it would be costly for ISU to host a game at Hulman Center. In 2009, the CBI wanted a $60,000 guarantee to host games. The CIT asked for just over $28,000. If ISU plays in the postseason, there’s a good chance it will be on the road.

The Sycamores themselves likely don’t care, they just want to keep playing.

“It’s been fun to play with the guys, we feel like the program has been turned around. Hopefully, we can play in a postseason tournament because I’m not ready to be done playing with these guys,” ISU guard Rashad Reed said.

• Eldridge impressed with Lathan — Lathan also set a career-high with 29 points. It impressed Eldridge, who was beaten by Lathan a few times.

“He was tremendous throughout the whole game. He hit some tough shots, he got to the basket, he’s finishing strong. He’s going to be a tough player in years to come with him only being a sophomore,” Eldridge said.

• MVC Tourney futility — With the loss, ISU was eliminated before the semifinal round of the tournament for the ninth year running.

ISU has played in every MVC Tournament but the inaugural version in 1977 and has only made it to the semifinals or better at the MVC Tournament five times: 1978, 1979, 1985, 2000 and 2001. The Sycamores won the tournament in 1979 and 2001.

Only Evansville, which has played in 17 fewer tournaments than ISU, has made fewer semifinal appearances than the Sycamores.

  Indiana State’s Robert Webb captured the heptathlon Saturday at the Grand Valley State Big Meet as he totaled the second most points in ISU history while dominating the event. Webb scored 5,140 points, which is second only to former Sycamore Anthony Bertoli’s 5,189 points in 2008.
  Webb, a senior, established three more personal best efforts enroute to the overall victory as he ran 8.45 in the 60 meter hurdles and 2 minutes, 50.73 seconds in the 1,000 meters while also clearing 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault. Webb entered the second day of the event in the lead with 2,893 points after winning three of the four Friday events and setting personal bests in the long jump and shot put.
