IU suffers first loss this season in Assembly Hall

Hoosiers unable to finish off strong rally against Minnesota

BLOOMINGTON — So much for Indiana’s perfect record at Assembly Hall.

Minnesota held off a late rally by the seventh-ranked Hoosiers to win 77-74 on Thursday night, the Golden Gophers’ first win in the Big Ten this season and the first time since 1985 that Minnesota defeated a ranked college basketball team on the road.

“Any loss is terrible. We’ve got to defend our home court,” Jordan Hulls said.

The Hoosiers (15-2, 3-2 Big Ten) came into the game as the nation’s top 3-point shooters, hitting 47.6 percent from beyond the arc. But it took 15 minutes for Indiana to finally hit a 3, a shot by Hulls.

Indiana finished the game 4 of 18 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hoosiers also had 16 turnovers, including the game’s final play.

It looked as if Minnesota (13-5, 1-4) had the victory clinched when Maverick Ahanmisi hit the first of two free throws to put the Gophers ahead 71-62 with 1:11 to play. But Matt Roth’s 3-pointer with 30 seconds left cut the score to 73-71.

Joe Coleman hit two free throws, but Cody Zeller completed a three-point play to make the score 75-74 with 17 seconds left. Austin Hollins hit two free throws for Minnesota to wrap the scoring.

But after a missed 3-pointer by Christian Watford, Julian Welch missed both free throws after grabbing the rebound. Zeller rebounded the second miss and called timeout with 1.7 seconds left.

Indiana threw away its chance to force overtime, though, when Watford’s long in-bounds pass went directly to Ahanmisi.

Zeller scored a game-high 23 points, Hulls scored 13 before fouling out, Will Sheehey scored 12 and Victor Oladipo added 10 points for Indiana.

The game was Sheehey’s first since the Dec. 19 game against Howard. He missed the last five games after hurting his leg when he stepped on a basketball in practice.

Austin Hollins led the Gophers with 18 points. Rodney Williams scored 14 before fouling out and Welch scored 10.

“We just didn’t have our edge [on defense tonight],” Hulls said. “Didn’t make stops when we needed.

“We’ve got to play a lot better defense to create our offense.”
