BLOOMINGTON —
Indiana hadn’t allowed an opponent to shoot better than 40 percent in three straight games heading into Sunday’s home game against Iowa.
Of course, the Hoosiers lost two of those three, and were left looking to reclaim momentum against the Hawkeyes.
Mission accomplished.
The Hawkeyes shot 63 percent from the field against the 16th-ranked Hoosiers and still lost 103-89.
Indiana (17-5, 5-5 Big Ten) had scored just 50 points in its last game, a loss at Wisconsin. The Hoosiers bettered that by halftime on Sunday, leading 54-37 at the break.
“It was obviously a big change, a lot more scoring,” said Indiana senior forward Tom Pritchard.
Indeed. Pritchard had a season-high seven points, including back-to-back baskets with under five minutes to play in the first half that earned him a standing ovation when he subbed out two minutes later.
“It feels good for [the praise] to come in a win,” Pritchard said. “Wins have been hard to come by in my career.
“The way we’ve been playing this year has been outstanding. We still have some things to work on, like defense and getting back in transition.”
The Hawkeyes (11-11, 3-6) wanted to run, and took advantage of the Hoosiers on several occasions to score easy transition baskets.
But after Iowa tied the game at 18-18 early, Derek Elston scored the Hoosiers’ next eight points, with two 3-pointers around a jumper.
“It was just those guards finding us [for easy baskets],” Elston said. “I know Will [Sheehey] got me a couple times.
“Once I saw that first one go down, that’s kind of how it goes for me shooting-wise; if I make my first couple, I have the potential to have a good game.”
“We want Derek to play with confidence,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “He’s one of our best shooters.”
The Indiana big men benefited even though the Hoosiers struggled from outside. Indiana was the nation’s second-best 3-point shooting team. But after hitting four of their first seven from beyond the arc, the Hoosiers missed their final nine 3-point shots on Sunday.
And it still didn’t matter, what with Indiana scoring 58 points in the paint. Much of that could be attributed to Indiana’s 20 offensive rebounds.
All told, the Hoosiers outrebounded the Hawkeyes 37-22.
“We are giving up a lot of size,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery conceded. “I thought I would go with two forwards tonight to start the game.
“Even the post guys were having their way inside … it wasn’t like they were running a lot of stuff to get them the ball. They were just catching the ball and finishing.”
Cody Zeller scored a career-high 26 points, one of six Hoosiers in double figures. Christian Watford scored 15, Verdell Jones III scored 14 and added nine assists, Victor Oladipo added 12, Elston scored 11 and Sheehey added 10.
Sheehey started in place of Oladipo — the first time Indiana has started a different lineup this season — because Crean said he wanted Sheehey to defend Iowa’s Zach McCabe.
The tactic worked, with McCabe scoring just three points after scoring 20 in each of Iowa’s previous two games.
Josh Oglesby led the Hawkeyes with 24 points, hitting 6 of 8 3-pointers. Matt Gatens added 20 points and Roy Devyn Marble scored 13. The Hawkeyes were 34 of 54 from the field, including a 19-of-24 showing in the second half.
But after pulling to within 32-31 on an Aaron White dunk with 7:05 to play in the first half, the Hawkeyes couldn’t keep up with the Hoosiers.
Indiana’s 103 points were the most the Hoosiers have scored in a Big Ten game since a 110-79 win over Iowa in the 1994-95 regular-season finale.
