IU triumphs

BLOOMINGTON — When Indiana’s Will Sheehey left the floor after receiving his second technical foul, the Hoosier fans cheered.

It helped that he was leaving a game the Hoosiers had well under control.

The 11th-ranked Hoosiers snapped a three-game losing streak and swept a Big Ten opponent for the first time since the 2007-08 season, rallying past Penn State 73-54 in college basketball Sunday.

Indiana (16-4, 4-4 Big Ten) won at Penn State two weeks before but had stumbled since, losing at home to Minnesota and at Ohio State and Nebraska.

And with the Hoosiers unable to find their shooting touch in the first half Sunday, it looked as if the Nittany Lions (10-11, 2-6) were primed to knock them off.

Indiana shot just 9 of 22 from the field in the first half, with Cody Zeller serving as the Hoosier offense. He was 4 of 5 from the field and 4 of 4 on free throws before the break, scoring 12 points.

Penn State had its own one-man show going in the first half, with Tim Frazier (5 of 10 from the field) scoring 10 of the Nittany Lions’ 29 first-half points.

Trailing 29-27, the Hoosiers came out of halftime with renewed energy. Zeller tipped in Verdell Jones’ miss, then Jordan Hulls stole the ball and set up a layup by Jones to put Indiana ahead 31-29.

Frazier hit two free throws after he was fouled by Victor Oladipo, tying the game. But a 3-pointer by Christian Watford put Indiana ahead for good.

The Hoosiers shot 15 of 23 from the field in the second half. The more impressive number, though, was the number of fouls called in an increasingly heated second half.

Each team was called for eight fouls in the first half. In the second half, Indiana was called for 17 fouls, Penn State for 15.

“It gets a little chippy sometimes [in the Big Ten], you just have to maintain your composure,” said Hulls.

That didn’t quite happen with Sheehey. The sophomore drew his first technical when he was fouled himself by Nick Colella with just under five minutes to play.

“He got hard fouled, but you’ve got to deal with it,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “It’s a maturity process.”

Sheehey’s second technical came with six seconds to play. Watford was fouled by Matt Glover — his fifth foul — on a 3-point attempt in front of the Indiana bench.

As players gathered, words were apparently exchanged, and Sheehey and Penn State’s Ross Travis were each called for a technical.

The second technical led to Sheehey’s ejection, but Crean didn’t expect it would force Sheehey to miss a game.

“There were no punches thrown, it wasn’t considered a fight,” he said. “It was more verbal than anything else. Tempers flared, but I don’t think anything escalated at any point outside of some verbal. And again, both players were held accountable for it.”

While Indiana found its shooting touch in the second half, the Hoosiers also turned up the defense. Penn State was just 5 of 22 from the field after the break.

“There wasn’t much space in the second half,” Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said. “We missed some layups and free throws in the second half.”

Frazier finished with a game-high 21 points for the Nittany Lions, with Colella adding 11 points.

Zeller led Indiana with 18 points, Hulls scored 14 and Watford added 11.
