METRO ROUNDUP: Rose-Hulman earns share of HCAC volleyball title

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman earned a share of the first regular-season volleyball conference championship in school history with a three-set win over Defiance College on Saturday.

The Engineers improved to 21-8 overall and established new single-season school records for victories and highest winning percentage by defeating Illinois College in four sets later in the day.

Rose-Hulman finished in a unique five-way tie for first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) this season. The tiebreaker process results in Rose receiving the No. 5 seed in the tournament, meaning the Engineers will travel to Transylvania in the first round of the league tournament Tuesday night.

Anna Lewer led Rose-Hulman with 10 kills and 11 digs, Casey Levitt added nine kills, seven digs and a team-high four aces and Kate Dangel pitched in with 10 digs.

Baseball

• Volkers Group ousted — At Phoenix, the Terre Haute Volkers team was eliminated by Detroit in the playoff round of the 65-plus World Series by a score of 7-0.

Larry Weaver and Murph Appling led Terre Haute with two hits each.

Cross country

• Engineers compete — At Anderson, the Rose-Hulman women’s team ran Saturday in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Freshman Nicole Gonzalez led the Engineers with a 19th overall finish with a 6-kilometer time of 25:03.93. Gonzalez was named to the honorable mention all-conference team for her efforts.

Rose returns to action in the NCAA regional Nov. 12 at Oberlin College.

Auto racing

n Clauson prevails — At Peoria, Ariz., Bryan Clauson was the feature winner in U.S. Auto Club action Friday at Canyon Raceway Park.

Clauson led the final six laps to win the 30-lap main event.

Levi Jones was fourth and took a 39-point lead over Windom in the sprint-car totals into Saturday’s racing at the track.
