METRO ROUNDUP: Jenkins, Goatee win inaugural Rush the Punter 5K

TERRE HAUTE — Steve Jenkins and TaPring Goatee were the 5K winners in the inaugural Rush the Punter event on Saturday at Fairbanks Park.

The event was started by Terre Haute North graduate and New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford.

In other track and field:

n Engineer men win HCAC — At Franklin, Rose-Hulman men’s team had six winners in winning their fifth straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday.

Sutton Coleman claimed titles in three different events for Rose at the meet. The senior won both the 110 (15.37 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (55.15) and was also a member of the first place 4x400-meter relay team (3:22.41).

Collin Crowson set a new HCAC meet record in the pole vault, clearing 4.88 meters to capture the title. Other Rose men’s winners were Micah Aldrich in the 5,000 meters (15:28.21) and Travis Stallings in long jump (6.88 meters)

The Hanover women’s track team earned their second straight outdoor track and field title. Rose-Hulman finished fourth with 103 points.

Rose-Hulman’s Liz Evans won two events, high jump (1.68 meters) and long jump (5.28 meters), while Creasey Clauser won the 400 in 59.56 seconds. Tanya Colonna (Brecksville, Ohio-H.S.) broke the meet record in the women’s pole vault, clearing 3.40 meters. Rose also won the 4x100  (50.54) and 4x400 (4:13.92) relays.

n Drake Relays — At Des Moines, Iowa, Indiana State senior Jeremiah Vaughan, sophomore Greggmar Swift, and the men’s shuttle hurdle relay team all picked up wins at the 103rd Drake Relays which ended on Saturday.

The ISU women’s shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays also established new school records on the final day of competition.

Vaughan won the men’s 1,500 meters with a time of 3:50.47. Swift won the 110-meter hurdles. ISU’s men’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Duane Brown, Swift, Robert Webb and Maurice Lyke won the event with a time of 56.42 seconds.

The ISU women’s 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay set a school record twice. Carmelia Stewart, Stacia Weatherford, Kelly Steffen and Sarah Snapp ran to a school record time of 57.40 iin the preliminaries, advanced to the finals at 57.21 seconds, before finishing third overall.

Former ISU athlete Kylie Hutson was also in competition placing fifth in the women’s pole vault special after clearing 13-feet-7 1-4-inches (4.15 meters). Jenn Suhr won the event by clearing 15-feet-3-inches (4.65 meters) to set a Drake Relays record.

Baseball

n Rose sweeps pair — At North Manchester, Rose-Hulman remained in first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 7-6 and 6-3 doubleheader sweep at Manchester on Saturday.

Rose clinched a bid to the HCAC Tournament scheduled for May 10-12. The league's regular season champion will serve as tournament host with games on their home field.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman pounded 12 hits. Both team scored three runs in the third inning, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth. Rose scored once in the fourth to provide the game deciding run.

In the nightcap, Rose scored three runs in the first and single runs in the second, third and fifth frames.

The two teams conclude their series with a single game at 1 p.m. today.

Softball

n Sycamores fall 1-0 twice — At Springfield, Mo., Lindsey Beisser allowed just a combined seven hits over two complete games but tMissouri State (22-22, 10-12 MVC) defeated Indiana State (18-31, 5-17 MVC) 1-0 in both games of a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader.

The final game of the series will take place at 1 p.m. today.

n Rose men sixth — At Seymour, the Rose-Hulman men's team is tied for sixth place after day one of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Rose-Hulman fired the team's second best score this season of 321 at the Shadowood Golf Course.

Jeremiah Cole led the effort with a round of 78, followed by Aaron Kiraly and John Rigitano (80), Eric Kamer (83) and Tucker Cox (93).

The four-day HCAC Tournament continues today, with the final two rounds at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash on May 5-6.

n Four for Wilson — At Hulman Links, Rick Wilson recorded his fourth career hole-in-one on the 130-yard No. 8 hole using a 7-iron last Saturday. All four aces have come on four different par-3 holes at Hulman Links.

n Schuerenberg prevails — At Gas City, Hunter Schuerenberg won the feature event in U. S. Auto Club sprint car racing Friday at I-69 Speedway.

Schuerenberg led all the way to win the 30-lap main event followed by Shane Cottle and Jon Stanbrough, who assumed first place in the sprint point totals.

Racing scheduled for Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway was wiped out by heavy rains.
