Hoosiers load up on in-state players

BLOOMINGTON — With a 1-11 record in his first season as IU football coach, Kevin Wilson knew there were a lot of holes to fill in terms of personnel.

Did Wednesday’s haul of 25 signees on National Signing Day address all of those needs?

“I don’t know that we got them all answered, but we went after it in a good way,” Wilson said. “Selfishly, [I would have liked to have added] maybe another corner, maybe another defensive tackle, maybe another linebacker, but you are not going to get them all.”

The Hoosiers added 13 defensive players, 11 offensive players and one athlete to the roster on Wednesday. Eight are from Indiana, including OL Jacob Bailey of 4A state champion Cathedral and DL Shawn Heffern of 5A state champ Carmel.

“I think the work ethic, the intelligence, the family backgrounds and coming from a lot of great winning programs, there are a lot of things about these kids that I think collectively make it a pretty decent class for us,” Wilson said.

Spurned by star quarterback recruit Gunner Kiel, the Indiana Mr. Football who backed out of a verbal commitment to Indiana and ultimately chose Notre Dame, the Hoosiers signed two quarterbacks on Wednesday to compete with incumbent Tre Roberson.

Cameron Coffman led Arizona Western Community College to the NJCAA national title game last season and is already enrolled at IU so that he can participate in spring practice. The Hoosiers also added Nathan Sudfeld, a Modesto, Calif., product who was rated the No. 14 quarterback in the nation by ESPN.

But the bulk of the recruiting class are linemen, six on defense and four on offense. For a team that struggled to stop the run and rush the passer last season, there’s definite room for improvement.

And quick improvement. Coffman is one of seven junior college players signed by the Hoosiers, six of whom will participate in spring practice. Five of the six are defensive players.

“We didn’t get into negative things (in recruiting),” Wilson said. “We didn’t talk about other programs. We talked about what we are trying to build.

“We were very honest that we didn’t think our season was close to anything we need and want, and that we’ve got a lot of work to do. We didn’t make any false promises about a player coming here to start.”
