Indiana State women have cold shooting night in loss

DES MOINES, IOWA — The Indiana State women’s basketball team struggled from the field Friday night inside the Knapp Center, shooting just 29.1 percent in a 60-43 loss to Drake.

The loss dropped the Sycamores to 12-13 overall and 6-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the host Bulldogs improved to 13-12 and 7-7 respectively. Drake also won the season series with ISU after its 67-59 victory Jan. 22 in Terre Haute.

Drake never trailed this time, using an 11-0 run over four minutes in the first half to take a 17-4 lead with 10:49 on the clock. The Bulldogs went into the lockerroom with a 32-19 lead at the break.

Seniors Deja Mattox and Brittany Schoen each tallied six points in the first half to the lead the Sycamores. Schoen knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first half, tying Kelsey Luna’s school record of 263 over her career.

Indiana State continued to fight in the second half, using a 6-0 run to cut Drake’s lead to four points at 38-34 with 11:10 to play. That was as close as ISU would get, however, as DU’s Morgan Reid found space in the Sycamores’ zone defense for back-to-back layups to spark a 12-0 run and give the home side a 50-34 lead with 7:44 remaining.

The Sycamores hit just three field goals over the final 11 minutes of the game, shooting 26.7 percent (8 for 30) in the second half.

Mattox led ISU with 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Anna Munn added eight points, all coming in the second half.

DU’s Rachael Hackbarth dominated the paint, posting her 11th straight double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds and holding senior Shannon Thomas to four points and one rebound.

ISU returns to the court Sunday when it travels to Omaha, Neb., to face Creighton. The Bluejays stand at 8-6 in the MVC after topping Illinois State 68-59 on Friday.
