Bell sets ISU All-American standard

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State running back Shakir Bell keeps setting new standards of excellence for the Sycamores’ football program.

Bell was named a First Team All-American by The Sports Network on Monday. It is the third time Bell has received first team honors on a Football Champisonship Division All-America team, no other Sycamore has done it in school history.

ISU safety Alex Sewall and fullback Brock Lough were named to the Second Team, while defensive end Ben Obaseki was named to the Third Team.

“It’s great for the young men and it shows how far we’ve come as a program,” ISU coach Trent Miles said. “It shows the caliber of people we’re bringing in and how much they challenge each other once they get here.”

Bell, who is one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award announced on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas, has already earned First Team All-America honors by the American Football Coaches Association and the America Football Coaches Association this year.

Bell became the first Sycamore to earn a trio of All-America mentions in the same season since 1995 when Dan Brandenburg was on The Sports Network’s First Team, the Associated Press Third Team and was Honorable Mention from Dan Hansen Football Gazette.

The Sycamores have not had three different players named an All-American during the same season since Dietrich Lapsley, Soso Dede and Richard Harris took home those honors in 2002. It is just the fifth time in the history of the ISU program (2011, 2002, 2001, 1997 and 1995) that three different Sycamores have earned All-America honors in the same season.

Bell led the nation in rushing with 1,670 total yards and a 151.8 per game average. His 1,670 yards this season broke the school record for single-season rushing yards and ranks eighth in league history.

Sewall, who earlier was named a Capital One First Team Academic All-American, ranked third in the MVFC in solo tackles and fourth in total stops, while placing 24th nationally with an average on 10.4 tackles per game.

He tied for the conference lead with three recovered fumbles, while making double-digit tackles in eight games this season, including a season-high of 17 against Western Illinois. Sewall finished his career with 358 career tackles, good for sixth in Indiana State history.

Lough, a Terre Haute native, had 309 rushing yards and 10 receptions for 49 receiving yards. He had five touchdowns overall, four on the ground and one catch.

Obaseki earned his first career All-American honor from the Associated Press last week.
