Rose men, women manage sweep

GREENCASTLE — Rose-Hulman’s men’s basketball team improved to 9-2 as it defeated nearby rival DePauw 67-59 on Monday at DePauw.

Austin Weatherford led the Engineers with 17 points and also had a team-leading five rebounds.

DePauw jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes and pushed the lead as high as 16-3 at the 11:34 mark of the first half. Rose answered with five straight points to close within eight points at 16-8, but DePauw withstood the early charge to take a 36-26 lead into the locker room.

Rose-Hulman opened the second half with a 7-2 run to set the tone and move within 38-33 on a score by Harlan at the 16:12 mark. DePauw pushed the lead to nine points again at 44-35 at the 13:31 mark, but Rose rallied with a huge 22-3 spurt to take a 57-47 edge with 4:33 remaining.

Weatherford provided a key 3-pointer to turn Rose-Hulman’s 49-47 lead into a 52-47 edge. Gissentanner continued the run with a layup and a 3-pointer to push the Engineer edge into double-figures, while the defense allowed just three points in nine minutes.

DePauw closed within five points at 62-57, but the Engineers relied on three free throws by Strickland and a pair by Weatherford to secure the victory.

Other Rose double-figure scorers included Nate Gissentanner with 13, Spencer Harlan with 11 and Julian Strickland with 10 points.

DePauw (5-4) was led by Tommy Weakley with 11 points.

Rose-Hulman resumes action Jan. 3 with a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Earlham.



Women’s basketball

• Rose-Hulman 52, Webster 46 — At Hulbert Arena, Rose-Hulman held Webster University to 15-percent shooting from the field in the second half to turn a two-point halftime deficit into a 52-46 women’s basketball victory on Monday night at Hulbert Arena.

Freshman Sheree Williams led the Rose offense with a career-high 17 points. Senior Alisa Dickerson added her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Heather Finnell also reached double figures with 11 points. Freshman Grace Gibbs pitched in with 11 rebounds along with four points.

Maggie Zehner was the only Webster player to reach double figures with 17 points.
