TERRE HAUTE — While all the buzz concerning the Indiana State women’s basketball team heading into the season is their eight new players, seven of them freshmen, it was one of the “old guard” stepping up to save the day in a college exhibition game on Saturday.
ISU had seen a seemingly commanding lead of 60-48 in the second half evaporate to just 66-63 with a little over one minute remaining.
Up stepped Kelsey Luna, spotting up and draining a long 3-pointer from the right wing with 38 seconds left. Luna’s trey allowed the Sycamores to relax just a bit, going on to win 70-63 before an announced crowd of 2,623 in Hulman Center.
“It’s your typical exhibition game,” stated ISU coach Jim Wiedie. “When you have a lot of new faces, you never know how they are going to react the first game out of the gate. I thought there were a number of things we did well.”
Luna paced the Sycamores with a game-high 22 points, including 4-of-6 sniping from 3-point range. Three other players scored in double figures. Deja Mattox — one of the freshmen — had 14 points, Kelsie Cooley 13 and Leah Phillips added 12, also knocking down four treys.
“It felt really good,” laughed Luna about hitting that big shot. “It was nice to create a little cushion for us at the end there. It was nice to be that person that did it.”
The Sycamores threatened to run away from the Greyhounds at the outset, scoring the game’s first nine points. But before the time the game was five minutes old, Indianapolis had knotted the score at 9-9, then took a 12-10 lead on a 3-pointer by former South Putnam player Jessica Canary.
The Greyhounds stretched its lead to 31-25, connecting on eight treys in the first half. However, the Sycamores ended the first half on a 11-1 run, leading 36-32 at intermission, never trailing again — although there were a few anxious moments in the game’s waning moments.
“It’s a new offensive system, it’s a new defensive system and they’re still kind of feeling their way around right now,” Wiedie explained his team’s periodic difficulties.
“A little disappointed in some of the stuff defensively. I think that’s the biggest adjustment for young players is how they defend. We’ve got some things we definitely need to get better at. But overall, they found a way to pull it out and be successful.”
As for the aforementioned freshmen? Wiedie was generally pleased with their first collegiate performances — albeit in an exhibition setting.
“We’ve got eight new players, seven that are eligible to play … seven freshmen,” Wiedie noted. “Where they’re at now vs. where they were in the preseason, they’ve made tremendous strides. For their first game out of the gate, I thought they did a really nice job.
“The biggest thing for them is understanding the intensity of the game and the pace of the game. How physical it is. It’s easy to get caught up in maybe feeling sorry for yourself when you get scored on, miss a shot, turn [the ball] over.
“My frustration today was I didn’t like our demeanor. I didn’t like our demeanor when [Indianapolis] made a run. I didn’t like our demeanor when we were [behind]. We just need to be a little more intense, a little bit more amped up regardless of what the situation is.”
Indianapolis was short-handed in this game due to a recent ankle injury suffered by their top returning scorer, former Terre Haute North standout Samantha Meissel.
“I’m just out for about another few days … I rolled my ankle in practice,” Meissel said. “So it’s just best to stay off of it.” Meissel will sit out Indy’s final exhibition game at Indiana on Tuesday, but expects to be ready for the regular season, a three-day tournament in California beginning Friday.
“I’m really proud of my team,” Meissel said of her team playing in her home town. “We stuck with [ISU].”
The Sycamores forced Indy into 24 turnovers, won the rebounding battle 33-27 — led by Kara Schilli’s seven boards — and went to the free throw line 33 times, hitting 22. ISU hit just 38.5 percent from the field, but limited Indy to 42 field goal attempts.
ISU will play its final exhibition contest vs. Missouri-St. Louis at Hulman Center at 3:05 p.m. this Saturday. The Sycamores open the regular season at Central Michigan on Nov. 15.
Notes — Despite only being a sophomore, Meissel is one of two Indianapolis players prominently featured on the cover of their media guide. Canary, a junior, is featured on the back of the guide … Indianapolis has one of the tallest assistant coaches in the country, 7-foot-3 Constantin Popa. The Romanian native played for the University of Miami (Fla.) from 1991-95, then professionally in Israel and France until 2002. Popa is in his second season as an assistant with the Greyhounds … Freshmen making their ISU debuts were Mattox, Shannon Thomas, Kayla Mullins, Amanda Pedro and Megan Burton. Wiedie noted that two other freshmen, Brittany Schoen and Bianca Jarrett did not play. Schoen was attending the funeral of her grandfather who died recently.
