VIDEO: Michigan State’s super sophomore helps Spartans topple ISU women

6-foot-9 Allyssa DeHaan scores 24, grabs 10 rebounds

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State women’s basketball team got De-Haan-isized by No. 23 Michigan State on Saturday.

It didn’t help that ISU’s shooting never shook off its permafrost.

Michigan State center Allyssa DeHaan stole the show in Michigan State’s 83-58 victory over ISU at Hulman Center. The 6-foot-9 sophomore had 24 points, 10 rebounds, 8 blocks and 5 assists. Michigan State’s Kaisha Keane added 20 points and 11 rebounds, but a lot of her production came when ISU threw two or three defenders at DeHaan.

“The hardest part about guarding someone that tall is no matter how hard you try to get around or do a three-fourth’s deny, they’re going to lob the ball in and our arms aren’t long enough to [defend],” ISU center Maria Olsthoorn said.

“She was good inside, she could hit the 15-footer, she could pass, she could rebound, she could pretty much do it all.”

Leah Phillips led ISU with 12 points. Olsthoorn added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Annie Bankhead also had 11 points.

Michigan State (7-2) only trailed on one possession early in the game, but ISU (5-3) had chances to make a game of it, only to have any momentum staved off by poor shooting, both from the field and at the line. ISU shot 27.4 percent from the field overall and was 60 percent from the line. Some of it was DeHaan altering shots in the lane, but more of it was just missed open looks.

“How many games are you going to have Kelsey Luna go 2 of 14 from the field? Or have Rudy [Laura Rudolphi] go 0-for-12? It’s not going to happen often,” ISU coach Jim Wiedie said. “We didn’t shoot as well as we’re capable of.”

After an early 6-4 ISU lead, Michigan State went on a 13-4 run to open up a double-digit lead that eventually peaked at 21-8. To that point, ISU had settled primarily on jump shots, and made just 4 of 20 to start the game, but once ISU began to penetrate the lane — notably on drives from Bankhead — the deficit began to gradually shrink.

“I knew we were getting down, because once we see the score, our demeanor seems to change, so I like to provide a spark for the team if I can,” said Bankhead, who had four assists. “I was trying to get in, create, and get us to the line.”

ISU’s aggressiveness got Michigan State in the bonus at the 9:34 mark and in the double-bonus with 3:15 to go when DeHaan picked up her second foul. ISU cut its deficit to 34-29 at one point, but the Sycamores were left wanting. ISU made 5 of 9 at the line in the final 10 minutes of the half.

“Whenever we needed a big three or an and-one, we just couldn’t get it. If you have to go down and defend that many possessions without scoring, it puts you in a tough spot,” Wiedie said.

Michigan State had a 36-29 at the break, having relied almost entirely on DeHaan in the first half as the Spartans shot 1 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half. The Sycamores wouldn’t be so fortunate in the second half.

It seemed ISU had a window when DeHaan picked up her third foul at the 18-minute mark. But ISU’s penetration dried up and so did its offense. The Sycamores hung in there, trailing by just seven at the 15-minute mark, but a 4 of 18 shooting start could not be overcome, especially when Michigan State began to bury its outside shots. The Spartans went on a 10-2 run to open up a 57-40 gap and the Spartans never stopped scoring. Their lead peaked at 28 in the final minute.

“Some of the things they do well, we don’t defend well, so I had concerns going into the game. But I thought our kids did a good job. It’s a nice win for us on the road, especially with a young team,” said Michigan State coach Suzy Merchant, who had three freshman starters.

Despite the loss, Wiedie was happier with the effort than he was in ISU’s narrow 61-57 win over Ball State on Thursday. Now it’s a matter of sustaining the effort, not easy given that ISU has a week off for exams before playing at Marquette next Saturday.

“I thought we took some positive steps, but what happens next week during practice? Do we get better as a team? That’s kind of our thing, have we gotten better since Vanderbilt? I don’t know, I thought we’ve kind of gone backwards a bit. Can we build on this? Do we have to play a ranked team to get a response. We’ll see,” Wiedie said.

The announced crowd of 4,492 was the fifth-largest all-time for a women’s game at Hulman Center, though it appeared many ticket-holders were absent.

  • ISU baseball team builds on success with 14-2 rout

Indiana State’s baseball victory over Alcorn State on Friday would take on more meaning Saturday if the Sycamores could build momentum and pick up on the good work they did in Friday’s ninth-inning rally.
    Mission accomplished.
The Sycamores were aggressive from the opening inning at the plate and starting pitcher Devin Moore gave them eight valuable and effective innings on the mound as ISU defeated Alcorn State 14-2 at Bob Warn Field.
“It was a really good experience for everybody. It felt great to finally come out here and put some things together. It’s also really nice when your offense puts a lot of runs on the board,” Moore said.
Moore’s eight innings of work were as valuable as gold to an ISU team that is short on quality arms due to injury and ineffectiveness. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning and one of the two runs he conceded was unearned.

To catapult oneself about 14 feet into the air with a large $500 fiberglass pole on a daily basis is a risky endeavor.
“We have to be fearless. You can’t be afraid at all,” said Hope, who has also catapulted herself into the NCAA’s elite in the event, ranking 15th in the NCAA with her leap of 13-feet, 9 1/4.

  • SPT 050113 ROSSELLI HIT.jpg Secret weapon: Kelsey Rosselli finishing Woods career with a bang

At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, reporting game results to the Tribune-Star after a win or a loss is not always a high priority.
So when one of its athletes enjoys an outstanding season, like senior Kelsey Rosselli is doing for the Pomeroys’ softball team in 2013, media publicity doesn’t always follow.
In fact, her efforts almost seem like a government secret.
Rosselli’s name might sound familiar to longtime Terre Haute softball followers because she was a standout for North High School, from where she graduated in 2009.
Since then, she’s helped The Woods finish runner-up in three straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournaments in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

  • SPT0501113ISUBB mcclain.jpg ISU baseball gets back into rhythm with victory

Baseball is a rhythm game. With contests every day or five times a week in the case of many college programs, you have the chance to build on success or wallow in a slump.
Mother Nature took that rhythm away from Indiana State’s team last week. After a 7-1 loss to Indiana on April 24, ISU was supposed to play a three-game series at Tennessee-Martin, but it was wiped out by rain.
So the rhythm was disturbed, but perhaps that wasn’t a bad thing.
ISU was in a five-game losing streak before its unintended vacation and the Sycamores made a move in the right direction Wednesday with a 7-0 win over DePauw at Bob Warn Field.
“It was a disappointing weekend. We went all the way down to Tennessee and didn’t get to play. We sat around in the hotel room. We came here and it was still raining. It was nice to get out and see some live pitching,” ISU center fielder Landon Curry said.

  • Indiana State loses 2 in MVC softball

Indiana State aspired to upset Illinois State to get at least a doubleheader split in Missouri Valley Conference softball Thursday at Price Field as the Sycamores opened an eight-game season-ending homestand.
Paige Schreiner hit a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the fifth inning and junior Shelby Wilson delivered a sizzling RBI triple down the right-field line in the sixth as ISU ended the day playing well against the league’s highest-scoring offense.
The result was still a 5-3 loss to the Redbirds (26-18, 11-6 Missouri Valley Conference) as freshman Halle Humphrey gave up four runs in the first two innings. Humphrey, called upon to pitch the opener as well — she’s the only full-time pitcher remaining on the team — gave up six runs and eight hits as the Sycamores dropped a 6-1 game to start the day.

  • SPT042413ISUBB conway.jpg Sycamores fall: Slumping ISU drops 8-1 decision to No. 19-ranked IU

The margin in baseball between success and failure is so tight.
Indiana State learned that lesson the hard way against No. 19-ranked Indiana on Wednesday.
For most of the contest, ISU matched IU hit-for-hit, but couldn’t match the Hoosiers run-for-run as IU took maximum advantage of its baserunners to post an 8-1 victory at IU’s new Bart Kaufman Field.
IU — winners of four in a row and owners of a 19-game win streak earlier this season — proved its quality by putting the foot on the gas in the last three innings of the contest. The Hoosiers scored five of their runs in that period.
But up until that point, the game was in either team’s hands, but the Hoosiers took it with better situational hitting. IU’s first baserunners in three separate innings came around to score; two of them did so with two outs on the board.
