SMWC puts up fight in tourney

But team comes up short in title series

Akron, Ohio — St. Mary-of-the-Woods downed Judson 6-2 Sunday morning in the semifinal round of the 2011 USCAA national softball championships, earning a trip to the best-of-three title series.

But the Pomeroys lost the first game against Rochester 3-0, then gave up four runs in the top of the seventh inning of the second game to allow Rochester to come from behind for an 8-6 win and the national championship.

Clutch two-out singles by Katelyn Tillotson and Sara Goelz in the bottom of the sixth inning had broken a 4-4 tie in the final game, but Rochester got five hits in the top of the seventh.

Although Goelz was the losing pitcher in both games against Rochester, she was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the final game. Chelsee Gerber, Melinda Bauer and Kelsey Rosselli also had two hits each, with Jessica Jonas contributing a triple and Aubrey Stich and Bauer a double each.

Tillotson had two hits and Bauer another double in the first championship series game, in which St. Mary’s left seven runners stranded and had another picked off in the first five innings.

Goelz pitched a complete game and got support from a 12-hit attack for the Pomeroys in the morning game, which sent Judson into the third-place contest and the Pomeroys to the championship series.

Gerber and Tillotson each went 3 for 4 for the Pomeroys, Tilloton driving in two runs and Gerber hitting a double and scoring twice.

Goelz helped herself with two hits, while Jonas hit a triple and drove in two runs.

One of Indiana State football coach Trent Miles’ stated goals for Saturday’s Blue-White spring football scrimmage was to get through the game unaffected by injuries.
As the 12-minute running clock ticked down — one of the concessions made by the football staff to speed the scrimmage up and get players off the field unscathed — it appeared ISU would make it through its spring game more-or-less unscathed.
But on the last play of the scrimmage, disaster struck.

Ryan Walterhouse couldn’t have picked a better time to get a pleasant surprise.
