COLLEGE REPORT: Valley’s women’s college hoops players start strong

Several women’s college basketball players from the Wabash Valley have gotten off to good starts this season on the hardwood. Highlights:

• Seibert pacing Mastadons — Terre Haute South grad Haley Seibert has taken full advantage of earning the starting point guard job this year for the Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastadons.

The sophomore guard ranks second in scoring at 8.2 points per game and also dishes out 3.3 assists per game. She is shooting .455 from 3-point range, and has more assists than turnovers.

In the season opener against SIU-Edwardsville, Seibert hit 5 of 6 threes to record 15 points.

Against Grace, Seibert was 7 of 11 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and added seven assists to help IPFW to its first win.

“I’m definitely getting more comfortable,” Seibert said of the point guard spot — a position she played in high school. “[Teammate] Amanda Hyde and I were just talking about teams really don’t know about me. I really didn’t get to play much last year, so they’re kind of leaving me open right now and my teammates are finding me.”

Seibert credited her teammates with finding her for the open threes against SIUE.

“I just kind of shot the ball with confidence,” she said. “We did a really good job of running the plays. Like Coach Paul said, this is definitely a learning experience. After this game, we don’t want to say that we’re ‘young’ any more — we just are just going to build off this game.”

IPFW Coach Chris Paul has no problems with Seibert letting it fly from behind the arc.

“If she continues to shoot the way she’s shooting, then I’m OK with that,” he said, “because if you look at it, she also had seven assists. That means she’s moving the basketball, as well.

“She’s not going to be open very often going forward now. Teams are going to know they can’t leave Haley Seibert open, and now we’re going to have to work really hard at finding her more shots.”

• Meggs honored — California-Irvine women's basketball player Kelly Meggs was named the ESPN Zone Anaheim Anteater of the Week earlier this month.

The junior guard from Seattle, who formerly played at Terre Haute North, had a clutch performance against her hometown school on Dec. 1.

Meggs knocked down a game-winning 3-pointer with 1:02 to go in overtime to lift UC Irvine to a 61-60 victory. The victory was the 'Eaters first non-conference road win since Dec. 20, 2010 against Seattle.

With lots of family and friends in the stands, she made five of her nine field goal attempts, including two 3-pointers, to finish with a season high of 12 points along with 3 assists. Four days later against Idaho, Meggs chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.

• McCarthy sets career marks — Terre Haute North grad Fran McCarthy set a career high with 18 points and 10 rebounds as Holy Cross defeated Judson 66-46 recently.

The junior forward recorded her first career double-double.
