TERRE HAUTE —
The University of Louisville men’s swimming program has looked heavily toward the waters of Indiana pools to maintain its elite national status.
Three of the five signees this fall for the No. 19-ranked and defending Big East Champion Louisville program hail from the Hoosier state, including Terre Haute South’s Addison Bray.
Head Coach Arthur Albeiro also signed Tyler Clingerman of Plainfield and Matt Ryan of Newburgh.
Bray joins the Cards via Terre Haute South High School and Coach Jeff Thompson’s Terre Haute Torpedoes. A multiple time High School All-American, the breaststroke specialist was runner-up at the 2010 Indiana High School State Meet in the 100-breast after posting the fastest time of the meet in the preliminaries (55.17).
“Addison is one of the top breaststrokers in the country coming out of high school this year,” Albeiro said. “We are extremely excited about his potential and look forward to his growth in the sport. He has the ability to be an impact player for us his first day on campus, but what excited me most throughout the recruiting process with Addison was his vision and goals for his collegiate career.”
Albeiro is looking forward to continuing his program’s success with the addition of these five athletes.
“This is a very solid group of men that fills some holes in our lineup. As a staff we feel that this class gives us a little of everything that we need. We had the luxury this year of being able to hone in on a few select young men that we felt could really move the program forward, and we succeeded in getting those individuals. It is our goal every year to find `our guys,’ young men that have a burning desire to do great things in the pool and the classroom, and believe that being a Cardinal is the best way for them to achieve their goals. These young men are definitely `our guys’,” said Albeiro.
• Bits and pieces — Senior forward Nate Blank of Terre Haute North opened his final season for the Indianapolis men’s team with a 27-point effort in a 102-89 win over IU-Northwest.
His season is on hold, however, after surgery on his left knee on Nov. 22. He could miss up to eight weeks.
Indianapolis Coach Stan Gouard praised Blank after the IU-Northwest game.
“I thought Nate was the one guy who was under control,” Gouard said. “When I took those five guys out of the game in the first half, Nate was guilty by association. I thought he did some good things for us tonight. He took his time and made buckets. Nate is the heart and soul of this basketball team.
“He’s the one guy during timeouts that is grabbing guys and making sure they don’t get too excited and forget about the game plan,” Gouard added. “The good thing about Nate is he wants to be a coach and that’s why he has a chance to be a good basketball player for us and why he is playing well.”
In that game, Owen Valley freshman Cody Vest started alongside Blank and had 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting (1 of 1 from 3-point range) and 1 of 2 at the free throw line.
Vest has started three games at center and averages 6.8 points per game.
• The 18th-ranked University of Indianapolis women’s basketball team has hit a rough spot early in the season, dropping its third consecutive game on Thursday. The Greyhounds fell 73-50 to Saint Francis (Ind.), scoring only 16 points in the second half.
Terre Haute North grad Samantha Meissel scored eight points off the bench, while Owen Valley’s Nickole Gonser started and had five points while Heather Gonser came off the bench for two points and two assists.
• Hanover’s women’s team is off to a 5-0 start, not including Saturday’s game at Defiance, and is 3-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Terre Haute North senior Molly Martin ranks second on the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game.
Martin is teaming with senior forward Torin Frantz of Bloomington South to form a lethal 1-2 combo on the front line. Frantz averaged 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds last week to help Hanover to a pair of HCAC wins, and was named the conference player of the week.
Martin had 15 points in a win over Manchester earlier this month to move into second place among Hanover’s career scoring leaders.
Martin lifted her career total to 1,480 points to surpass Terry Sprinkle, who had 1,470 points for the Panthers from 1981-84. Jennifer Skaggs set Hanover’s career mark with 1,524 points from 1997-2001.
