TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South grad Michael Engle of DePauw was selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played last weekend.
Engle, a 6-1, 168-pound senior, tied a DePauw single-game school record with six touchdown passes as the Tigers' cruised to a 45-16 season-opening victory over Rose-Hulman.
Engle completed 26 of 36 passes for 300 yards in just his second career start, and tied the school mark of six TD passes set by Spud Dick against Rhodes last year. The senior signal-caller tossed two TD each passes to all-American wideout Alex Koors (7 and 12 yards) and Nathan Evans (9 and 5 yards). Jon Ellis (12 yards) and Bobby Coburn (1 yard) each hauled in one scoring reception from Engle.
• Tierney USF starter — Former Terre Haute resident Shaine Tierney has won the starting quarterback job for the University of Saint Francis.
Last week, Tierney ran for a pair of touchdowns in a 70-7 win over Iowa Wesleyan.
Junior Justin Boser also played a lot of time last week, and USF Coach Kevin Donley plans to utilize both signalcallers this season.
“Both will play,” Donley said. “How much is depending on the situation of what we need to do to move the football. You don’t know how people are going to play you until you get into the course of the game.”
Tierney, who started one game as a sophomore when then-starting quarterback Jeff Wedding went down with an injury, said the competition has made Boser and him better.
“Sometimes it’s frustrating, but I think it’s brought the best out of me and out of Justin, and it’s best for our team,” Tierney told the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette. “I’ve always had confidence in myself and I know my teammates have confidence in me; it’s just a matter of getting out there and getting all the little things done.”
Tierney has recovered from an injury-plagued junior season last fall.
“Shaine was never 100 percent last year,” Donley says. “He had surgery in May or June of 2009 and played through pain all season. That last game of the season he had to come in and play on just one good leg. He’s a tough kid. He probably had a better spring than last fall because in the spring he was stronger and healthy again.”
• College tennis news — Hunter Bullock, a member of the all-Summit League women’s tennis team as a freshman last spring, has left IUPUI and transferred to the University of Indianapolis.
The Terre Haute South grad is considering joining the Greyhounds’ team next spring.
Another former Brave is off to a great start this fall, as Maddy Bogle has recorded a 4-0 doubles record and a 2-2 singles mark to start her junior year at Kentucky Wesleyan. Bogle picked up singles wins at the No. 2 and 4 positions, and has won two matches each at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
North grad Brittany Farmer won three singles matches for Butler at No. 5 singles in the DePauw Invitational, losing only six games in the three matches. Bloomfield grad Bailey Maryfield went 0-3 at No. 7 singles for IUPUI in the same tournament.
• Bits and pieces — Former Terre Haute and Olney Central baseball standout Bobby Woods has transferred from Alcorn State to Waldorf College in Iowa to resume his baseball career.
• Terre Haute North senior Sarah Potter signed a national letter of intent in August to attend Marian University in Indianapolis and continue her tennis career.
She will pursue a nursing degree.
n Rockville grad Drew Kelley will be playing baseball at Marian, while former Rox football standout Tophel Secuskie is on the DePauw football team. Secuskie was a two-time all-Wabash River Conference selection and was a linebacker for the victorious North All-Stars in the annual Wabash Valley Coaches All-Star Game.
• Coming off back-to-back Summit League regular season co-championships and the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, the IUPUI women's soccer team has been pegged the preseason favorite to capture the 2010 title.
Terre Haute South grad Anna Pigg is a senior back for the Jaguars.
• Following her third knee surgery last year, South grad Brooke Daugherty is preparing to begin her senior season on the basketball team at Indiana-South Bend.
Daugherty missed all of last season, but kept up her work in the classroom by being named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference academic all-conference and an NAIA Academic All American.
She also made the Dean’s list for both the fall and spring semester at IUSB.

Catching up as the school year winds down
Odds and ends from here and there as the school year quickly winds down. For starters, high jumper Nick Jaeger of Terre Haute South was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s male track & field newcomer of the year:

College Report: Lively earned collegiate upgrade with strong play
Hillary Lively signed to play Division II basketball at Maryville (Mo.) during her senior year at North Vermillion, but those plans changed and she would up at nearby Danville Area Community College — where she recently concluded an outstanding two-year career.
Lively was impressive enough to earn a Division I scholarship to Southeast Missouri State of the Ohio Valley Conference, and both her future and past college coaches think she will continue to succeed there.
“She fits what we need,” SEMO coach Ty Margenthaler said. “She has college experience, she is strong and physical and plays well around the basket and moves well.
“Her strength, rebounding and touch around the basket will be a big help. On the defensive end, she’ll be able to guard a true center.” -

Danny Etling, meanwhile, has completed graduation requirements at Terre Haute South and is preparing for an upcoming high school all-star game and his first college classes in a couple of weeks. -
