TERRE HAUTE —
Michael Engle graduated from DePauw University in the spring of 2011 with a degree in political science and future plans to advance his studies in law school.
Being a coach’s son and a competitive athlete by nature, Engle has put those plans on hold for now.
After coaching running backs last fall at DePauw, Engle has taken a big leap up the coaching ladder and now serves as the wide receivers coach for Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.
Bryant competes at Football Championship Subdivision level, and is coming off consecutive 7-4 seasons.
Engle is glad to be a part of this successful program.
“Prior to the start of spring football, I was presented with a great opportunity to join the Bryant University football staff and jumped at the opportunity,” said the Terre Haute South grad, who played for his father [Jay] with the Braves. “I was extremely fortunate to be presented with an opportunity to work for a great university with a top notch football program. I get the benefit to work with a phenomenal coaching staff and a great group of student athletes.”
Engle was a backup quarterback for the first two years he played at DePauw, and then got a chance during his junior year after an injury to Tiger signalcaller Spud Dick — one of the top Division III quarterbacks ever.
Engle took over for good in his senior year, leading the Tigers to a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and the NCAA tournament. He completed 282 passes for 3,180 yards and 30 touchdowns in his final season. Engle averaged 289 yards per game, completing 65 percent of his passes on the year.
“Each day reminds me that staying in the coaching profession is a great career choice for me,” he said. “I truly enjoy having the opportunity to impact the lives of student athletes on a daily basis and stay within the game of football that I have always loved.
“I have been extremely lucky to be able to work for great institutions with great football traditions,” Engle added. “Each day is a learning experience for me and I continue to develop as a coach and person with each day passing day.”
Engle is not the only Bryant coach with Terre Haute ties.
The head coach of the Bulldogs is Marty Fine, who spent six years as the offensive coordinator (1993-95) and offensive line coach (1990-92) at Indiana State. The Sycamores' offense led the Gateway Conference in rushing from 1992 to 1995 and was ranked in the top-15 nationally during that same time.
Entering his ninth season as head football coach, Fine is already the winningest coach in school history.
Fine’s quarterbacks coach is Steve Brickey, who has had three different coaching stops at Indiana State. Brickey was on the Sycamore staff from 1978-1985, returned in 1992 as offensive coordinator and again in 2004 as quarterbacks coach.
Brickey is in his second year at Bryant, coming to Rhode Island from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., where he was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator and coaching the quarterbacks from 2007-2010.
