Several Wabash Valley area cross country standouts had excellent outings on Saturday to help their teams to outstanding team finishes.
Indiana’s men’s cross country made a bold statement at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Saturday at Madison, Wisc., with an impressive win over a highly-ranked field of opponents, including No. 6 Wisconsin.
Terre Haute North grad Zach Mayhew ran fourth for the Hoosiers in a time of 23:52 and was 10th overall. Greencastle’s Andy Weatherford was sixth for the Hoosiers and 41st overall in 24:20.
The IU men, entering the meet raked No. 25 by the USTFCCCA, also defeated No. 23 Princeton, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 15 Oklahoma, No. 20 Providence and No. 18 Michigan State.
Shakamak grad Anthony Witt ran second as Grand Valley State placed third in the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning in Louisville, Ky., that featured several Division I squads.
Witt placed 26th with a time of 24:19 as GVSU ran the fastest team time in school history.
• BCS football report — Former Northview offensive linemen Scott Wheeler and Joey Evinger, the Valley’s two representatives in Bowl Championship Subdivision football, are both sidelined this season for different reasons.
Wheeler is a freshman tackle at Kent State, and is sitting out under the program’s policy of redshirting all freshman linemen.
Evinger, a senior at Louisville, will miss this season due to a back injury but will have one year of eligibility left next season. He had been listed on the UL depth chart as the starting right guard in the spring.
Two former area residents are also competing at college football’s highest level.
Texas senior receiver James Kirkendoll was his team’s second leading receiver through four games with 15 receptions, and he led the team with 201 receiving yards.
He has scored one touchdown and has a long reception of 45 yards.
Anthony Oden, a sophomore offensive tackle and younger brother of NBA center Greg Oden, is listed as the third-string right tackle for Arkansas. The 6-8, 328-pounder did not see action in a near upset of top-ranked Alabama two weeks ago.
• Seaton sidelined, again — Terre Haute South grad Kristen Seaton has been sent to the sidelines again by injury, and hopes to return to the court for the Pepperdine Waves by season’s end.
The Pepperdine senior had shoulder surgery in December and spent all spring and most of summer rehabbing.
Seaton began playing again in July, but at the team’s summer camp one of the campers took out her knee.
“They were pretty positive it was my ACL,” Seaton said. “It turns out my knee cap just got dislocated again, so I'm working on rehabbing that to hopefully get some playing time before the end of the season.”
• Five Braves heading to D-1 — Terre Haute South has five athletes already committed to play Division I athletics upon completion of their high school careers.
Baseball standout A.J. Reed announced last summer that he would sign with Kentucky. He had surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus suffered when sliding into third base while playing this fall.
He said on his Facebook page that the surgery went well, and he is now headed for therapy. Reed will be out of commission until January.
We’ll track down the other four Braves — seniors Haley Seibert (basketball at IU-PU-Fort Wayne), Addison Bray (swimming at Louisville) and Thomas Goss (golf at Dayton) plus junior Hannah Lee (basketball at IU-PU-FW) — over the next couple of weeks and tell their stories.

Catching up as the school year winds down
Odds and ends from here and there as the school year quickly winds down. For starters, high jumper Nick Jaeger of Terre Haute South was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s male track & field newcomer of the year:

College Report: Lively earned collegiate upgrade with strong play
Hillary Lively signed to play Division II basketball at Maryville (Mo.) during her senior year at North Vermillion, but those plans changed and she would up at nearby Danville Area Community College — where she recently concluded an outstanding two-year career.
Lively was impressive enough to earn a Division I scholarship to Southeast Missouri State of the Ohio Valley Conference, and both her future and past college coaches think she will continue to succeed there.
“She fits what we need,” SEMO coach Ty Margenthaler said. “She has college experience, she is strong and physical and plays well around the basket and moves well.
“Her strength, rebounding and touch around the basket will be a big help. On the defensive end, she’ll be able to guard a true center.” -

The NCAA “regular” signing period begins Wednesday for all sports except football, field hockey, soccer, track and field, cross country and men’s water polo.

Former Terre Haute resident Jack Meggs quarterbacked the Bellevue Wolverines football team to the Washington Class 3A state championship this fall, culminating with a 35-3 win over Sammamish Eastside Catholic — Bellevue’s fifth straight crown.
Danny Etling, meanwhile, has completed graduation requirements at Terre Haute South and is preparing for an upcoming high school all-star game and his first college classes in a couple of weeks. -
