TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute native Mike Roberts is continuing his climb up the college basketball coaching ladder, recently departing Rice for a spot as the associate head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro.
Roberts, who was an assistant coach at Rice for the past four years, previously worked on head coach Ben Braun’s staff at California for two years and at Rice played a role in the Owls building a foundation for the program’s future success.
Rice improved each year during Roberts’ tenure, marked by a 19-16 record and a postseason appearance this past season.
“I really enjoyed the past four years at Rice and the past six years working under Coach Braun,” Roberts said. “Coach Braun has played a major role in my development as a coach and mentor to young men and I consider him to be a dear friend.
“I was able to grow professionally and made many lifelong friends during my time at Rice. I wish the program nothing but the best moving forward and I am excited about the new opportunities ahead at UNCG.”
Braun said, “Mike has been a very valuable addition to our basketball program over the past four years. He will have a great opportunity as the associate head coach at UNCG. I believe Mike has a very bright future in college coaching. Our staff and players have appreciated his dedication and wish him nothing but success.”
Roberts lived in Terre Haute as a youngster but moved to Oregon during junior high. He returned to the Hoosier state to play for the Indiana Hoosiers under Bob Knight before beginning his coaching career.

n Modesitt honored — The IUPUI men’s tennis team, which claimed a share of its first regular-season Summit League title since 2004, placed three players on the All-Summit League Team — including West Vigo grad Joel Modesitt.
After going 4-1 in Summit League matches, Modesitt brought home all-conference accolades for the first time.
In addition to going 4-1 in singles action between the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, Modesitt also posted a 3-1 record in double action with teammate Nick Volz.
n Another Reed honor — Terre Haute South grad A.J. Reed was honored as the Southeastern Conference baseball “Freshman of the Week” in March after leading UK to five wins as the No. 4 hitter, midweek starter and weekend late-inning reliever.
Reed picked up two wins on the mound, one coming in a midweek start and the second coming in relief of UK’s series-clinching win over No. 2-ranked South Carolina.
In both of his wins on the mound, Reed — who was in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak — delivered the game-winning RBI at the plate.
At the plate, Reed led UK in hitting all week batting .526 (10 for 19) with two doubles, one homer and five RBI. He had a 1.12 ERA on the mound, striking out eight in eight innings.
n Haag to Oakland City — Sullivan soccer standout Christina Haag has signed to continue her career at the collegiate level for Oakland City.
Sullivan High School’s 2010 and 2011 captain, Haag led the Golden Arrows to four consecutive league titles, as well as earning sectional titles in 2009 and 2011.
Individually, Christina ended her high school career with 131 goals, the third highest total in ISHAA history, including a school record 36 her senior season, and was named 1st Team All-State in 2011, Terre Haute Tribune Star Female Soccer Player of the Year in 2009 and 2011, along with All-District and Western Indiana All-Conference honors three years in a row.
“I couldn’t even begin to thank my coach Kurt Hauger enough,” Haag said. “He was always there to support our team and I through any game or obstacle. He was a great coach that taught me many different things about the game that I plan to take with me to the collegiate level.
“I also would like to thank Richard McPhail, Raymond Secrest and Paige Bond for all of their help with coaching an outstanding group of girls.”
