• The Indiana University volleyball team (7-2) earned a 30-17, 30-22, 26-30, 33-31 win over the Western Michigan Broncos (7-2) Saturday afternoon, winning the ‘07 Valparaiso Popcorn Classic.
Former Terre Haute South standout Lauren Ditteon, now a senior, had eight blocks for IU against Western Michigan.
• South grad Stephanie Wilson recorded a match-high tying 36 assists in just three games of work on Friday as Southern Indiana recorded a 29-31, 30-20, 30-18, 30-21 victory over Quincy University in both teams’ Great Lakes Valley Conference-opener Friday.
• Former Union standout Stacey Secrest has ended her volleyball career but is continuing as a student at Indiana State. She was the full-time setter for the Sycamores for the last half of her freshman year, and attained a 4.0 GPA in the first semester.
• The college baseball career of former Terre Haute North standout Chris Lindley has come to an unfortunate end, with Tommy John surgery scheduled on his throwing arm in December.
Some people come back from Tommy John surgery, but in Lindley’s case it isn’t going to be possible.
“I was pitching in a summer league this year, and felt something pop when I threw a changeup,” Lindley said. “It turns out I had totally detached the ulna from my UCL, and the doctors said I am done playing baseball. It’s really frustrating.”
Lindley first started noticing a little pain in high school, but nothing too severe.
“The real pain started at the beginning of my sophomore year at ISU,” he said. “I had my first surgery 15 months ago, and then had 11 months of pretty tough rehab. I thought I was back to 100 percent and it was feeling great.”
The first surgery Lindley had was called omnigraft, where the tendons are detached and then reattached. This time, they will be switching tendons from his left arm to his right arm.
Lindley said he doesn’t have to have the surgery, but his quality of life will be better as he ages.
“If I ever just want to play softball with the guys, or throw in the backyard with my kid, it’s better to get it cleared up now,” he said. “It’s been terrible. Playing college baseball was my goal since I was a little kid, and I spent more time in the rehab center than anybody.”
Lindley is majoring in safety management, and will graduate next fall.
• Former North Central cross country standout Robert Shiflett will continue the string of ex-Thunderbirds running for Purdue University over the next four years by joining the Boilermakers as a walk-on.
Shiflett was a four-time all-conference honoree, three-year team captain, semi-state qualifier and all-state honoree who led his team to a conference championship and semi-state qualification as a senior.
Michial Jacob of North Central ended his Purdue career last fall.
• Sierra Taft, who pitched North Central to the 2006 Class 1A softball state finals, has transferred from Lake Land to Southern Indiana and has also joined the Screaming Eagles team as a walk-on. She joins former Sullivan County rival Ally McKinley of Sullivan at USI.
•Hanover College’s men’s basketball team has added a Division 1 opponent to its schedule with a Dec. 15 game in Roberts Stadium against the University of Evansville. The Panthers will also regain the services of Terre Haute North grad Dan O’Leary, a junior who did not play last season but has rejoined the squad.
• Marian College lost its first-ever football game 30-15 to William Penn College of Iowa. Northview grad Jamie Bays, who was selected as one of the team’s captains, started at running back and had 88 yards in 11 carries.
• Terre Haute South grad Diana Price has switched sports at Indiana State, changing from track and field to golf.
Price was a three-time All-Metropolitian Interscholastic Conference honoree for the Bsraves and was a medalist seven times as a junior.
She led the Braves to the IHSAA Regionals in both 2004 as well as 2005.
“Diana Price is a talented athlete who will be able to help our team right away,” ISU Coach Mike Whitson said. “She has displayed her athletic talents over the past year with the track and field team and I anticipate more of the same in golf over the next four years. She enjoyed a tremendous high school career, and has played at a high level in the past.”
The Sycamores opened the season this weekend by competing in The Preview At The Brickyard.
• Sullivan native Bob Doty, who served as an Indiana State baseball assistant coach and also as head coach at Terre Haute North, has relocated to Florida to work at a baseball school in the Sunshine State.
Doty works as an instructor for the Top Prospects Academy in Brevard County, Fla., and lives in Melbourne, Fla.
• Indiana State’s baseball team has compiled an aggressive schedule for next spring that will challenge the players in the classroom, including North grads Nick Ciolli and Jordan Shaw-Tyler, as much as on the field.
Trips in the cold weather months of February and March to Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee will keep the Sycamores out of state for all but four school days from Feb. 22 to March 23. Spring break takes up one of those weeks from March 10-14.
Such trips are a necessity, though, if cold-weather schools want to be competitive. Announcers on the softball College World Series this summer noted that Northwestern – one of the participants – had played its first 30 softball games on the road last year.
