‘Country store’ opens at Meadows

TERRE HAUTE — The smell of scented candles blended with spice Saturday morning as Country Cabins opened for business.

“This has always been my dream, to own a country store,” Kelly Rost said inside The Meadows Shopping Center where, in between Hallmark and Walton’s Rocks and Beads, her new business now operates.

Rost and her husband, Steve, hosted a grand opening there Saturday morning and the store was crowded by noon. Rost described the store as “country primitive,” with their own merchandise as well as that of vendors.

“We have about 30 cabin vendors,” Steve said, noting the store uses the term “cabins” in lieu of booths.

The 3,500 square foot store was packed full of “country primitive home decor” ranging from paintings and woodwork to Amish jam, popcorn, fudge and candles.

“We do a lot of craft festivals,” Steve said of the store’s collection. “I think this is going to keep us busy.”

Rost said she worked at Antiques, Crafts and Things for about 13 years and enjoys the various items bought and sold in such stores.

Sheila Collins drove down from Waveland to help out with the grand opening.

“The handmades,” she said when asked her favorite specialty in the store.

Collins has owned Keepers, a “country primitive” store in Lafayette for five years. “I rent here also,” she said of Country Cabins, adding two of her own vendors have set up booth space in Terre Haute as well. “It puts my kids through college,” she laughed.

Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the store will operate noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
