Forbes adds ISU to its list of tops colleges

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University has been recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the top colleges in the country.

This is the first year Indiana State has been included on the Forbes listing of the nation’s very best schools.

“We try to evaluate the college purchase as a consumer would,” Forbes said in announcing its 2011 list that includes 650 of the nation’s 3,250 colleges and universities. The magazine said the rankings focus “on the things that matter most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt.”

“It is especially gratifying to be recognized as one of America’s top colleges based on factors that are so vitally important to students and their families in today’s economy,” said Indiana State President Dan Bradley. “Our faculty and staff have worked hard to not only maintain educational quality in the face of budget challenges but to ensure that resources are devoted to those areas where we can best serve our students and the state. Thanks to this recognition by Forbes, even more families will discover the value of an ISU education.”

Now in its fourth year, Forbes’ annual list of “America’s Top Colleges” is prepared by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington-based think tank.

Citing data from the U.S. Department of Education, Forbes notes that Indiana State’s total annual cost is less than $20,000 per year for in-state students and that 89 percent of students receive some form of financial aid.

The Forbes rankings are based on five general categories: post graduate success, which evaluates alumni pay and prominence; student satisfaction, which includes professor evaluations and freshman to sophomore year retention rates; debt, which penalizes schools for high student debt loads and default rates; four-year graduation rate; and competitive awards, which rewards schools whose students win prestigious scholarships and fellowships.

Indiana colleges on the list

• Indiana State is among 17 Indiana institutions included on the 2011 Forbes “top colleges” list. Others include Notre Dame, DePauw, Wabash, Indiana, Evansville, Purdue, Ball State, Butler and IUPUI. Also on the list are Hanover, St. Mary’s (Notre Dame), Taylor, Goshen College, Valparaiso, Huntington, Earlham and Anderson.
