Tribune-Star upgrades its ‘smartphone’ look

TERRE HAUTE — Reading the Tribune-Star on-the-go just got a lot easier.

Last week, the newspaper dramatically upgraded its presentation for mobile phones with Internet access, known as “smartphones.”

“It’s a whole lot easier to navigate and quickly find the news you want,” said Shaun Hussey, web development director for the Tribune-Star.

Under the old smartphone format, mobile device users saw a slightly jumbled and cumbersome-to-use version of the TribStar.com desktop version, he said.

Now mobile device users will find a much sleeker and quicker way to read the Tribune-Star in a format especially designed for smartphone users.

The Tribune-Star’s desktop website includes a lot of “bells and whistles” that mobile device users don’t need or want, Hussey said. When it comes to mobile newspaper content, “less is more,” he said.

Although it’s still too early to have definitive figures, use of the Tribune-Star’s mobile format appears to be way up since the new system was launched Wednesday, Hussey said. And, so far, readers seem to like the change.

“So far, it’s all positive,” Hussey said of the feedback he has received.

The Tribune-Star mobile edition is suited for iPhones, Blackberries and other “smartphones” that allow Internet access. It also includes features that provide easy texting and e-mailing of photos and articles, Hussey said.

“This provides a great ability for us and our local advertisers to reach readers,” he said, adding that some mobile devices even have “location detection” features that allow advertisers to target people where they are.

“At some point,” Tribune-Star publisher B.J. Riley said, “page views on the Internet will be primarily with mobile devices, and it was prudent to ensure that we were reader-friendly with a smartphone. It is just another way for Tribune-Star readers and Tribstar.com users to stay informed about what’s happening in the Wabash Valley.”
