Former Terre Haute resident Debbie Zlomek, RN, CDE, CPT, now of Pottstown Pa., and the certified diabetes educator for Pottstown Medical Specialists Inc., was named the 2012 Northeast U.S. recipient of the Exceptional Certified Pump Trainer Award presented by Medtronic Inc., a global manufacturer of medical technology equipment.
Medtronic makes insulin pumps and other equipment and therapies to address the needs of patients suffering from diabetes, a potentially life-threatening disease that degrades the body’s ability to regulate sugar in the blood.
The award acknowledges Zlomek’s hard work and dedication in providing the highest level of patient education and training.
Zlomek is a certified pump trainer for equipment from several manufacturers, including Medtronic.
Zlomek, who was chosen for the honor from a large field of candidates, is one of only 18,000 nurses, dietitians and other licensed professionals across the country whose knowledge, experience and expertise in educating patients afflicted with diabetes is recognized by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. She also is one of few CDEs working in the greater Philadelphia region solely for family medical practice offices like those of PMSI.
PMSI is a physician-owned multi-specialty group practice with offices in Pennsylvania’s Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties. PMSI’s diabetes education program, which Zlomek helped establish in 2010, is itself accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
Zlomek has been a registered nurse for eight years. In September 2011 she was named by PMSI as the first recipient of its Quality Award. She is a cum laude graduate with an associate’s degree in applied science from Montgomery County Community College, and earlier attended Muhlenberg College, the State University of New York at Oswego and Indiana Business College.
Separately, Zlomek also is a professional in human resources certified by the national Society for Human Resources and a Pennsylvania public notary. She is a member of both AADE and SHRM. Additionally, she is recognized by the American Heart Association as an instructor of its Basic Life Support and Heartsaver education programs for individuals, health care providers and emergency first responders.

Nine members of Rockville Correctional Facility staff participated in the 11th annual Jason M. Baker Beyond the Badge 5K Run and Walk at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, on Sept. 23. The annual event raises money for the Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund, which provides assistance to Indiana high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in public safety at an Indiana college or university. Baker’s father, Jerry Baker, a veteran law enforcement officer, established the run and scholarship fund in memory of his son’s sacrifice and to honor all those who work in public safety at a local, state and national level.
The 5K Run and Walk offers a competitive team and individual race as well as a noncompetitive run and walk. This year, there were nine public safety teams, 19 civilian teams and approximately 700 total registrants. Rockville was well represented by Unit Team Manager Gini McCullough, who finished the race with a time of 27:55, placing 158 out of 398 competitors.
Jason Baker, an officer for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, was en route to a disturbance on Sept. 17, 2001, when his attention was diverted to a vehicle that refused to stop. The pursuit of this vehicle became a high-speed chase, at which time the suspects began shooting at Baker with high-powered assault rifles. Upon rounding a corner, Baker was met with an ambush when the suspects, armed with AK-47s and body armor, exited their vehicle and opened fire. Baker was fatally wounded. More information on the 5K Run/Walk can be found at www.heroesofpublicsafety.org.

Longtime Parke County Extension Director Mark Spelbring retired Sept. 30 after more than 27 years of service with Purdue Extension in Parke and Vermillion counties. He was responsible for the agriculture and natural resources program area and the community development program area. Spelbring also helped with 4-H youth program activities and county fairs in both counties.
Spelbring joined Purdue Extension in 1985 as Vermillion County Extension director. He served in that role for 10 years, helping guide the program through a statewide downsizing and adjustment of staffing. He accepted a dual county Extension educator position in 1995, picking up half-time responsibilities in Parke County for several years. He also served as a statewide land use specialist at the Purdue campus in 2000-01. Spelbring became full time in Parke County in 2002, and assumed the County Extension director role in 2003.
Spelbring is a native of Clay County, having been raised on the family farm near Poland. He earned two degrees from Purdue University, and served his first eight years in the Cooperative Extension Service as an Extension livestock agent in Pasco County, Fla.
Over his career, Spelbring has taught and led numerous programs in many aspects of agriculture and natural resources. He served on the Bi-State Ag Program Group his entire Purdue career, working with other Purdue and University of Illinois Extension staff. He started the Parke/Vermillion Master Gardener program, helping train more than 100 volunteers over 15 years.
Spelbring helped create and taught leadership development programs in both counties. He taught workshops on local government to audiences in his counties and around the state. Spelbring helped create the Vermillion County Economic Development Commission and the Parke County Learning Center. He served on area or county plan commissions in both counties, including several years as president of each one, and helped lead the comprehensive planning process in Parke County.

With its three-year occupational injury and illness rate nearly 40 percent below the national average for its industry, Cintas’ Terre Haute facility is leading the charge toward occupational safety and health excellence.
The Indiana Department of Labor welcomed Cintas Terre Haute into Indiana’s Voluntary Protection Program as a Star site. VPP Star is the highest level of occupational safety and health recognition an organization can achieve.
To participate in VPP, a company must develop, implement and maintain an effective worker safety and health management system. In addition, the facility’s worker injury and illness rates must be below the national average for their industry. Fewer than 60 Hoosier workplaces have achieved VPP certification.
“Cintas has been successful in its efforts to foster a culture of workplace safety and health,” said IDOL Commissioner Lori Torres. “The Indiana Department of Labor is proud to work with Cintas to advance this culture.”
The Cintas facility in Terre Haute supplies rental uniforms, floor mats, restroom and hygiene supplies as well as promotional products for businesses in west-central Indiana and east-central Illinois. Rental material and other products are delivered to customers by a fleet of service vehicles. The Terre Haute site employs approximately 40 workers.
The facility will celebrate its VPP certification at a ceremony on Nov. 13.
To learn more about VPP visit www.in.gov/dol/vpp.htm.

Naysayers should treat good news as good news
I like to complain as much as anybody else. In truth, I may do more than my share of finding fault and wagging a finger in warning. Nonetheless, I’m tired of commentators (including many economists) who find nothing good and only the darkest clouds for the past few months.

The result was a game he called Criss Cross Words, renamed 10 years later as Scrabble. In honor of Scrabble’s 75th anniversary, we’d like to challenge you to a word puzzle.
