Beer brewed by Brugge Beer in TH wins medals

TERRE HAUTE — Brugge Brasserie in Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis recently claimed two bronze medals at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival Competition, the largest national beer competition recognizing the most outstanding beers produced in the United States today.

Brugge Brasserie was recognized in American Style Sour Ale category for its Diamond Kings ‘09 and the German Style Sour category for its Bad Kitty. All Brugge Brasserie entries to the Great American Beer Festival Competition were brewed by Brugge Beer in Terre Haute where renowned brewer, Ted Miller, crafts fine Belgian beers for distribution to restaurants, bars, and retailers throughout the state.

Miller explains the winning brews: “Diamond Kings 2009 is essentially our anniversary beer. It changes as we do, but it is always “wild.” Wild in beer terms means the brewer has used an unconventional yeast/micro-flora in its creation to impart complex flavors & aromas. This year we brewed an American Sour Ale. This beauty of a beer has an intense “Brett” nose [Brett is Brettanomyces and is used by brewers in some Belgian styles like Lambic], is decidedly sour — but is balanced. A real treat with pate’s and cheese.

“Bad Kitty is a Leipziger-style Gose (Goes-Uh). It is a German-style sour ale. Refreshing, tart and crisp. Great with pickled foodstuffs. We have this on tap now,” Miller said.

Located along the Monon Trail in Broad Ripple Village – Brugge Brasserie opened its doors in April 2005 and offers Belgian style ales, Continental lagers, a sophisticated menu and a casual, friendly setting. The recent kudos mark the second year Brugge Brasserie has taken honors from the Great American Brew Festival.

“We take great pride in positive feedback from those who know craft brew best — this is the premier National event for our industry so we are most proud to be among the winners,” Miller said.
