TERRE HAUTE — Nashville-based HCA announced that Terre Haute Regional Hospital is among 96 of its 135 licensed affiliated hospitals included on The Joint Commission’s list of Top Performers on Key Quality Measures program for 2012. The 620 hospitals on the list represent the top 18 percent of Joint Commission hospitals reporting core measure performance data for 2011.

HCA comprises 162 hospitals and 112 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states and England. HCA’s 156 U.S. hospitals operate under 135 licenses because, in some cases, more than one hospital may operate under a single license.

Hospitals on The Joint Commission’s list met the following criteria. First, the hospitals achieved performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability data for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, the hospitals also met a 95 percent performance threshold for every accountability measure for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, excluding measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients.

“Top Performers recognition is based on nationally comparable accountability measures of delivered clinical performance, not opinion surveys,” said Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin, HCA’s Chief Medical Officer and President of the company’s Clinical and Physician Services Group.

“The measures are based on the scientific evidence about the practices that lead to better patient outcomes in areas such as heart care, pneumonia, surgery, and childhood asthma,” said Perlin. “The 2012 results reaffirm the dedication to evidence based care and positive patient outcomes that is shared by our physicians, nurses and other caregivers during 20 million patient encounters annually.”
