Registered nurse Glenda Berry was awarded the 2012 “DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses” during a ceremony May 8 at Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center.
The annual award, which is nationally known, shows appreciation for nurses who go above and beyond the call of duty to give their patients the best care possible. The award program is conducted through the DAISY Foundation, which was established in 2000 by a family who wanted to turn the loss of their son into something positive.
Berry, who has been a nurse for the past 50 years, works in the emergency department/special care unit. She was one of 11 PCH/FMC nurses nominated for the distinguished award. Other nominees were Cheri Fellers, Mary Hutchinson, Brandi Strow, Katie Clements, Annette Nelson, Staci Webb, Crystal White, Eunice Chaney, Marcia Murphy, and Dawn Welch. Each nominee was awarded a certificate and DAISY pin.
As the winner of the 2012 PCH/FMC DAISY Award, Berry received the “Healer’s Touch” statue, a box of Cinnabon cinnamon rolls to share with her fellow nurses, a certificate, a lapel pin, and a banner to hang in her department.
Berry was named the 2012 honoree based on nominations submitted by her peers. These nominations made evident her service not only to patients, but also to her fellow nurses.
“Glenda has been a mentor and role model for me as well as other staff,” said critical care manager Samantha McCarty, who nominated Berry for the award. “From the impeccable way she is dressed to the manner in which she cares for patients, she exudes professionalism.”
Berry has spent the majority of her nursing career at PCH/FMC. She has worked as a nurse in obstetrics, the medical/surgical unit, intensive care unit, and emergency department. She has also worked as a nurse manager. She and her husband, Wayne, have three daughters, two of whom are nurses. They have 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Social Security: Try this word puzzle challenge
In 1938 — only a couple of years after Social Security was signed into law — a depression-era, unemployed architect named Alfred Mosher Butts studied the front page of The New York Times to figure out how often each of the 26 letters was used. The result was a game he called Criss Cross Words, renamed 10 years later as Scrabble. In honor of Scrabble’s 75th anniversary, we’d like to challenge you to a word puzzle.
