Magnolia drops retirement complex plans for Ohio Boulevard

TERRE HAUTE — The company that had been hoping to build a new senior living complex along Ohio Boulevard has canceled its plans.

Magnolia Health Systems of Indianapolis had asked local officials to rezone property on the north side of Ohio Boulevard between Brown and Fruitridge avenues. Due to the outpouring of public opposition from people living in that neighborhood, Magnolia has dropped those plans.

“It is abundantly clear that the facility which we intended to enhance services available in this community is not welcome,” Vince McGowen, director of business development for Magnolia Health Systems, stated in an email to the Tribune-Star this afternoon.

The company will “absolutely not be going forward” with any development plans in Terre Haute or Vigo County, McGowen told the Tribune-Star when reached by telephone.

Magnolia had been seeking permission to rezone about 46 acres of undeveloped property for the complex, which would have housed about 90 nursing home residents, about 50 assisted living residents and approximately 30 residents in patio homes.

The complex would have cost approximately $20 million, company officials had stated.
