Pancake Day donations up 33 percent from last year

TERRE HAUTE — Scott Womack, president of Womack Restaurants and IHOP franchisee, gave official thanks to the communities that helped raise more than $12,200 during National Pancake Day celebrations at the company’s IHOP restaurants on Feb. 23.

While accepting donations that increased 33 percent over those in 2009, Womack’s nine Indiana stores and two Ohio stores also served 12,308 free short stacks of pancakes to guests.

 “We are truly thankful to everyone who made a contribution during this year’s National Pancake Day,” said Womack. “These dollars will help some very important local organizations to continue their needed community services.

 The Terre Haute location raised funds for The Crisis Pregnancy Center of Terre Haute.

Pancake Day has been celebrated for centuries in England, as people prepared for fasting during Lent.

Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products, hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.
