BUSINESS CENTS: Are your customers Angry Birds?

Do you have angry customers whom no matter what, you find it extremely difficult to please? Remember, customers could be having a bad day for a variety of reasons, and it could impact their attitude. So the real question is what can you do about it as a business owner?

1. Their time is very important: If you are putting a customer on hold and not addressing their needs, there is no doubt they will lose patience and get upset. There is nothing worse than being transferred four times when you make a phone call. Try to assist the customer as quickly as possible.

2. Customer service: Be friendly, helpful and courteous no matter how upset the customer is. You honestly do not know what may have occurred earlier in their day to upset them.

3. Compassion: Be calm and understanding. In other words, show the customer you actually care about their situation; this move will typically calm them down quite a bit.

4. Tweet on Twitter: It is not uncommon for companies to monitor complaints through social media outlets like Twitter. One time I had an issue with an airline when traveling to Mexico for vacation, and within 24 hours the airline had contacted me about my problem via Twitter. Why? Because I Tweeted how unhappy I was with the service at the particular hub.

5. Meeting expectations verses exceeding expectations: Most people over promise and under deliver. Try switching things around. Over deliver and under promise; it will always make you look good in the customers’ eyes. For example, if you are an automotive parts manufacturer and you told your customers they will have the order delivered in three weeks, get it there in two weeks instead. You will be a champion in their eyes.

6. Bureaucracy: Do you have unnecessary rules and regulations in your company? Too many meaningless policies? Fix them. Get rid of the irrelevant guidelines. For example, route paperwork straight to the decision maker instead of through multiple channels. Just because something has always been done a specific way, it doesn’t mean it is the best way to do it. As technology improves along with work efficiency, there are often improved ways to complete tasks in the workplace.
