Terre Haute facility contributes to record year for GE Aviation

TERRE HAUTE — For CFM International, the joint venture between GE Aviation and France’s Snecma, 2011 was a record year with 1,500 orders for the CFM56 engine and 3,056 commitments for LEAP engines. The combined value of these orders and commitments is $51.7 billion at list price.

The GE Aviation facility in Terre Haute manufactures air manifolds and stationary seals for the CFM56 engine and structures for the LEAP engine line, and these commitments mean long-term stability at the Terre Haute facility as well as gradual employment growth.

The GE90 engine also experienced a record year in 2011, with airline and freighter operator commitments of 400 engines — far surpassing their previous 2007 record of 250 commitments. The GE90 is a commercial jet engine specifically designed for the Boeing 777, and for which the Terre Haute facility develops bearing housing, combustor liners and centershields for combustor assembly. The contribution from the facility to this record-setting year for the GE90 is a significant part of a nationwide GE effort to create hugely innovative and important products that influence the lives of thousands.

The record amount of orders for these engines are yet to be built, offering long-term stability for the Terre Haute facility and the hundreds of people employed there.

The GE90 engine trailed Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce in sales throughout the 1990s, resulting in the engine line being completely cancelled in 1997. Now, 21 years after its initial development, the GE90 is celebrating a year marked by success: Boeing recognized a variant of the engine, the GE90-115B, as a winner to power their 777s and this combination is now the best-selling aircraft-engine partnership in its class. Additionally, GE90 has influenced the development of nearly every commercial engine at GE Aviation.
