A&E Salvage opens second location

LINTON — John and Tammy Arroyo built A&E Salvage and Recycling in Sullivan by taking other people’s throwaways and converting them into products that can be recycled. The opening of a second location in Linton proves they have a successful business formula.

A&E Salvage and Recycling in Linton opened last month. It accepts everything from cars to appliances — anything that might have once been new in a home or company. Then A&E reduces them to scrap and recycles the material. Tammy operates A&E Salvage and Recycling in Sullivan and John is frequently on the road with two mobile car crusher units.

For their second location, the Arroyos bought an existing scrap yard, remodeled the facility and cleaned past environmental damage. Now it is open as A&E Salvage & Recycling in Linton, at 12800 West 250 North. Harris Bank and the Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corp. provided a small business expansion loan to A&E from the U.S. Small Business Administration 504 loan program.

Indiana Statewide CDC works with local lenders to provide loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration 504 loan program for expanding companies. Congress created the SBA 504 program to provide long-term, fixed rate financing for small business owners nationwide. Since 1986, SBA 504 loans have funded more than $62 billion to more than 130,000 small businesses. In turn, those small businesses have created or retained more than 2.1 million jobs for the U.S. economy.

Executive Director Jean Wojtowicz says that the Indiana Statewide CDC has invested more than $415 million in 955 Indiana companies since 1983, creating or saving 26,500 jobs. Indiana Statewide CDC is the leading SBA 504 lender in Indiana.

The Arroyos employ about 10 people for their Linton yard. Sixteen are employed in Sullivan.

“The 504 loan helps us do more: We bought a new, large magnet to separate unprepared steel, and are buying larger quantities of unprocessed scrap” John said. “With our new equipment, we are not just a salvage yard, we are a ‘recycling yard.’”

A&E sells recycled metals to several companies. John has more than 23 years experience in the metal recycling and car-crushing business. The Arroyos started their business in Sullivan in 2005.
