Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology alumna Elizabeth M. Hagerman is returning to her alma mater to serve as vice president for Rose-Hulman Ventures, the institute’s successful innovation space that has spawned careers and entrepreneurial enterprises throughout Indiana. She will report to Interim President Rob Coons in a cabinet-level position that officially begins July 1.
Hagerman has a wealth of experience in business development, business assessment and emerging technology evaluation through leadership roles at Baxter Healthcare in Los Angeles. Baxter Healthcare is a subsidiary of Illinois-based Baxter International Inc., a worldwide leader in patient care products. Hagerman most recently led the global integration of a Baxter Biosurgery product acquisition and licensing. She also has worked with Baxter Biosurgery’s business development office to provide scientific assessment of more than 300 acquisition targets, including the addition of a $330-million company.
While at Baxter, Hagerman has also worked with research and development and marketing teams in the United States and Austria to advance product development, coordinated academic research with Baxter Biosurgery products, managed strategic planning for next generation product launches and brand development, and developed orthopedic sales training materials.
“Elizabeth has been an intrapreneur who can empathize with entrepreneurs and engineers,” Coons said. “She has a passion for education and experience with tech-transfer issues. She brings to Rose-Hulman Ventures valuable experience and skill in business development and strategic assessment of emerging technology. With her expertise in working with technology and financial decision makers, she can be a catalyst to build even more learning opportunities for our students.”
Hagerman earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Rose-Hulman in 2000 before receiving master’s degree and doctorate from UCLA in biomedical engineering, with a focus on orthopedic biomaterials. She is an expert on tissue engineering, cell adhesion, bone regeneration and tissue biomineralization, and has two patent applications filed.
Throughout her academic and professional career, Hagerman has been associated with Rose-Hulman. She received the Distinguished Young Alumni Award in 2008, and has been a member of the board of trustees since 2009. She will relinquish her board seat on June 30.
“I’m looking forward to building relationships that help propel the entrepreneurial experiences of Rose-Hulman students to the next level. The depth and creativity of academia, combined with expertise and culture of business, provide an exciting platform for emerging ideas,” Hagerman said.
Over the past 12 years Rose-Hulman Ventures has developed a one-of-a-kind, higher education-business relationship model that bridges the gap between research and the marketplace. At Rose-Hulman Ventures, creative-thinking interns design innovative products; build and test first-ever, functional prototypes; and help move concepts to solve problems in a variety of real-world engineering areas. This relationship drives value for clients; enhances the education of many Rose-Hulman undergraduates; and has altered the career paths of several alumni.
“Rose-Hulman Ventures has become an important differentiator for Rose-Hulman,” Coons said. “It has put on full display an important long-standing core value of a Rose-Hulman education — learning engineering by doing engineering that is project-based, hands-on, real-world and theory-into-practice. It is this brand of education that leads employers of our graduates to affirm that our students ‘hit the ground running.’”
Ventures is in a 35,000-square-foot facility on 180 acres in a Certified Technology Park on the Institute’s South Campus.
