More companies attend Rose-Hulman career fair

Job prospects grow for 2010 college graduates

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is experiencing increased interest from companies seeking quality candidates to fill full-time, internship and co-op positions in engineering, science and mathematics — attracting 85 companies and 200 recruiters for the college’s winter career fair Jan. 27. That total is 10 percent higher than last year.

“It is still a challenging marketplace, but opportunities do exist (for college graduates),” admits Kevin Hewerdine, Rose-Hulman’s director of career services and employer relations. “Companies are in the wait-and-see mode and aren’t making any quick decisions. It’s definitely a buyer’s market.

However, companies are still seeking quality candidates who can make a difference and help their companies weather these challenging economic times.”

The National Association of Colleges and Employers is reporting what appears to be a turnaround in the job market for new college graduates. NACE’s most December survey of employers found that a third expected to increase college hiring in the first quarter of 2010, while 26.7 percent expected a decrease – the first time since August 2008 that the optimists outnumbered the pessimists.

Career fields most in demand this year are computer science, electrical engineering and computer engineering, according to Hewerdine.

Rose-Hulman’s Office of Career Services organizes three career fairs (fall, winter and spring) to give its students the opportunity to take advantage of job openings that develop throughout the school year. This year’s career fair will be the third-best winter event in school history.

Companies attending the winter career included Alcoa-Engineered Products and Solutions (Independence, Ohio), BMW Manufacturing (Greer, S.C.), Boston Scientific (Marlborough, Mass.), Cummins, Inc. (Columbus, Ind.), Dresser, Inc. (Houston), Duke Energy (Charlotte, N.C.), eTapestry.com (Charleston, S.C.), Ingersoll Rand (Novi, Mich.), NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (Alabama), Raytheon Company (Tewksbury, Mass.), Rockwell Collins (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Siemens Energy (Orlando), Solar Turbines (San Diego), Southwest Research Institute (San Antonio), UOP/Honeywell (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Whirlpool (Benton Harbor, Mich.).

Joining this group were Wabash Valley companies Bemis Company, Garmong Construction Services, Metals & Additives Corporation, Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane, Tredegar Filmed Products and Rose-Hulman Ventures, and approximately 30 other Indiana companies. “The number of companies that we have been able to attract is a positive in these economic times,” said Hewerdine, who commends the career fair organizing committee (career services staff and students). “Rose-Hulman has maintained being on these companies’ recruiting lists because of the quality of our students and national reputation. Also, our alumni have done a great job making a difference for their companies. Those efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The companies are coming here to get more quality employees like them.”

Approximately 60 Rose-Hulman alumni were among the corporate recruiters and representatives attending the winter event. Elliot Goodman (Mech. Eng., ’07) travelled from Jupiter, Fla. — on his own time and expense — to make sure that Power Systems Manufacturing was represented. He is a staff mechanical design engineer with the company.
