The good times have returned for college job seekers in such technical fields as engineering and computer science. The latest evidence is the 37 percent increase in companies and corporations from throughout the nation that attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Winter Career.
A total of 122 companies and more than 350 recruiters reviewed undergraduate and graduate students for full-time, internship and co-op opportunities. That compares to 89 companies that attended last winter’s fair.
“There’s definitely an upward movement in the level of interest among corporate recruiters in our students in many career fields,” said Kevin Hewerdine, director of career services and employer relations. He noted that approximately 24 percent of those companies attending the winter fair had never recruited at Rose-Hulman. “We have been pleasantly delighted with the number of participants in our Winter Career Fair.”
National companies reviewing students’ resumes at the winter fair included Microsoft, Raytheon Company, Cisco Systems, Northrop Grumman, Alcoa and Frito-Lay.
Additional companies represented were: Rolls-Royce, General Electric, Caterpillar, Rockwell Collins, Halliburton, Archer Daniel Midland, Schlumberger, Marathon Petroleum, Boston Scientific, Delphi, Hershey Company and Texas Instruments. Some of the Indiana and Midwest firms on the list were Beckman Coulter, Brightpoint, Gentex Corporation, Hill-Rom, HNTB, Hologic, Interactive Intelligence, Kimball Electronics Group, Lexmark, Logikos, Remy International, Software Engineering Professionals, ThyssenKrupp Presta, Valeo Sylvania and Vectren.

Not all Rose-Hulman seniors were among those standing in line at this winter event — they already have accepted job offers or are contemplating serious employment opportunities to begin their post-college careers this summer. Two of those seniors are chemical engineering students Scott Gallmeier of New Goshen and West Vigo High School and Katie McNair of Terre Haute North High School. Gallmeier has accepted employment at Halliburton, while McNair will be starting her post-graduate career with UOP-Honeywell. This is another positive sign about an improving job climate for 2012 college graduates.
“Companies want to get their hands on the brightest minds as early as possible,” said Hewerdine. “They aren’t waiting until this spring to tap into the talent in the Class of 2012. If they see a top-quality candidate that fits into what they need, they’re going to do everything to get them to join their team.
“Also, students aren’t waiting. If they see a good opportunity in their career field, they’re taking it,” he said.
Computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering are among those technical fields in heavy demand by employers, according to Hewerdine.
Rose-Hulman had a 99 percent placement rate for the Class of 2011, according to a recent report from the Office of Career Services. The average starting salary was $62,416 for last year’s graduates, with a high offer of $96,000 for a software engineering major.
